Getting a new pet - would you get rid of the old one?

which one? (PM if you prefer)

I could have a word ...

if they are a half decent centre then the homevisit should have picked up this.

if not then grrrrrr

we spend 2 weeks vetting people and making sure that they and the dog get on who want one of our dogs before they actually get the adoption papers. and then we do a follow up visit in 6 months time to make sure the dog is being well treated. micky mouse rescues make me angry. part of the homevisit is normally to speak to the whole family to ensure everyone is happy with having a dog and making sure tehy inderstand the responsibiliites that go with it.

I don't know which centre as she doesn't live in the same town as me.

I can't see how the home visit would have picked this up as she was probably very plausible and she has a lovely home. She used to take her son to the kennels to walk the dogs as he was so desperate for a dog.

Johnny - I got my finger caught in the lawnmower once and it scared me. And he likes to make himself useful. :)

I don't understand at all how anyone can bring an animal into their lives and not end up loving it, or at the very least feeling fond of it and a bit attached. I mean if you're incapable of forming some sort of affectionate bond with a pet, what on earth is the point of having one? I just don't get how anyone even could get rid of a pet, or even want to. I find some people unfathomable.

They probably see it as an accesory, like a handbag or sumit.

I had to re-home my dog and two cats when I moved to london. it was heartbreaking and one of the hardest things I've had to do. not everyone that has to get rid of a pet is a total tosspot.

Well, my daughter said "I'd hate to have a friend like that". :(

I think I;d really have to think about my friendship with someone like that when I disapprove so strongly with the way she lives and her lack of values

yep - I think about them loads and feel guilty four years on, even though I know they went to brilliant homes - in the case of my dog, he ended up in a big house in the country with land and horses, I ended up in a tiny flat in london ;) karma ;)

Well, it's not really a strong friendship. She comes round, I hide. :D And she only ever phones me when she wants something. I'm more friendly with her husband, he is much nicer than she is.

Tank Girl, your situation was completely different and understandable because it couldn't be avoided.

This is someone doing it on a whim and without care to the cat which is the problem.

Why would they have to get rid of the cat? Lots of dogs get on fine with cats, and surely they would have thought to choose one that does.

I don't think I'll ever understand people like this, voluntarily (sp?) getting rid of a pet just cos it doesn't suit them anymore

Although I am eternally grateful to the woman who got rid of Skitz and Skoda to Battersea 17 years ago because she was having a baby. Cheers chuck, I spent many happy years with Skitz and Skoda is still going strong :)

When I told the dogs home after they found my lost dog, that they might as well put him down as I'd given all is stuff away they weren't best pleased:confused: ;)

Dog and cat can live together without too much hassle....

the first two weeks will be a bit stressful as the dog will invariably want to play with the new cat.

The cat is unlikely to be enthused by this prospect and will proceed to kick the dogs arse..

a status quo will be reached where they basically just ignore eachother..

Certainly these people sound like they shouldn't be responsible for pets...
:(

That's exactly it - I don't even want to think about how I'd feel if I couldn't look after mine any longer and had to find a new home for them for their own sake, just the thought of it is upsetting me. How anyone can do it for no good reason, just replacing one pet with another, without even a hint of sadness or remorse, like their animals mean nothing to them at all, that's what gets me. :(

I was very upset when Beyonce died, and said we should get rid of Shirley because I didn't want to buy another one just for it to die, and Shirley needed another one to keep her company..

Just grief, of course, and my husband told me not to be silly.

He bought Treacle one Sunday, when I was at the fetish fair, and I adore her, of course.

I don't think I could resist telling this woman what I really thought of her. Gloves off, IMO
