Getting a new bathroom fitted

Thanks gaijingirl - i have tricky pipes as well so sounds like it could be similar (though my kitchen is tiny so maybe less).

Pip, my bath is really narrow - about 62cm - and when I was looking into it, it was no problem finding baths down to about 65cm, with 70 fairly standard

Our kitchen is also very small - not big enough for a table or anything like that - just basic units, cooking, sink etc. Although it looks bigger now since we've had it properly done!

Don't worry, I thought as much :D

Hmmm, interesting. I've been looking at a few baths with side mounted holes (snigger), but yeah, that bit would be against the wall. I hadn't even considered the problem of getting access to them :(
It's not so much of a problem if you're fitting a new one, because what you do is to rig up the taps on the bath and fit pipe tails before moving it into position, then you can usually connect up the pipe tails by some judicious groping around under the bath.

If you have a bath already in situ, though, you'll probably have to take it out to do the tap work, and that means chiselling away all the grouting/sealant that's there now, disconnecting the waste, moving the bath out and doing your fiddly stuff before reversing the process. All doable, but fairly faffy.

Is Wickes really crap then?

B&Q is crap, but I had high hopes of Wickes.

I need to buy a suite this weekend so if anyone has any good suggestions...especially if they have a store in No London or central London so I can see it before I buy it online.

As I told Pip, I like this lot. Good prices and good service for me so far...

I should demand payment from them for this :D

ETA, Wickes are crap, though not so crap as B&Q. Both shops sell inferior suites, and the staff know next to nothing about it. Its a complete minefield buying plumbing bits as there is so much choice, so if your knowledge is limited, ideally you need someone who can answer your questions.

I got my new bathroom suite from Apex Pluming Supplies in NW7 a couple of years back.

Not sure if they're still around but the price was way better than the big DIY stores.

If fitters are getting this sort of money for doing kitchens and bathrooms i'm seriously in the wrong trade.
Gut the bathroom, remove and fit new doorframe and rough plaster the walls - 1 day
Tile the walls -1 day
Fit new bath, sink and toilet - 1 day
Grout, paint, hang door and finish off - 1 day
£400 a day

My kitchen/dining room is about 90% complete and it took me about 14 days to get to that stage (working alone) and that was to gut it, build studded wall, plaster wall, tile floor (160 x 300mm sq tiles), build new units from flat pack, plumb in new sink, add new sockets, tile walls, fit extractor.... and that was with endless visits to diy shops.
And i'm by no means a tradesman.
My bro in law fitted the work tops and he charged me £400 fitted (£300 for tops and £100 labour)
My whole kitchen has cost me about £1500 to complete.

I wouldn't say Wickes were crap, no. You're more likely to get crap if you buy at the bottom of the range in one of the street sheds - Wickes has pretentions to being a trade supplier as well as being for the DIYer, and the lower-priced end of the Wickes range tends to be what would be called "contract" - ie., no-frills, basic standard plain quality, nothing to write home about but not too rough either.

He said he'd just put the tiles over the existing tiles as it was easier than pulling all the old tiles off - so no plastering.

It does seem a lot of money - but then from all the stuff I've heard it does seem to be what gets charged - apart from what you've just said of course! Obviously if we could do it ourselves that would be the cheapest option but we can't.

eta - looks like you are in the wrong trade having just seen your kitchen.

If I can find a suitable bath for less than about £300 I think I'll just get a new one. If I'm going to be spending money anyway I might as well do it properly and make sure it looks nice IYSWIM.

Where are some good bath shops then? Apart from B&Q and bathstore.

Edit: I reckon this would fit the bill :hmm:
