I know a guy who's born North London and hates the English football team, always supports Scotland (he has family up there and thinks it's a socially democratic idyll) He's an Arsenal fan and can't get his head out of club fandom so has never supported England as it's not Arsenal
. But more importantly he hates what he calls 'working-class-tories' and the whole media hype behind the previous decades of Beckham, golden generation, Rooney etc. He likes to drive around housing estates that bore the England flag on council houses and white vans and see them dashed to the floor in misery. Hates the national anthem, made me get up and go at Brands Hatch once after a race and the national anthem came on.But he is an ardent fan of the England Cricket Team, follows them religiously. Not sure what he makes of the current England team as there's been no hype and no huge ego players and no violence, and not many flags on cars about, at least not down here in Brighton. We had a row and he dumped me.
He'll be wearing a Sweden shirt no doubt tomorrow. Must have hated the exorcism of the penalty shoot-out.

Half of my family is Scottish and I have tried to support Scotland in games against other countries but simply can't do it. I get 5 minutes into the game and find myself applauding Botswana/Chile/Cyprus whoever for winning a corner. It's a football thing, I like the Scots and I like Scotland but can't support their team just as I loathe and despise Man City because I am from Manchester and am a born and bred Red.

Unless one of the Swedish players wrestles Kane to the floor for a penalty I don't see us scoring. We never looked likely to score against Columbia, apart from the penalty. Did the Columbia keeper even make a save? I can't recall one.
The Swedes seem to be managing at least one goal per game so its 1-0 Sweden for me. Four more years of hurt.

You see for me, and the reason why I voted England to win on penalties v Colombia, is that people play out their own histories again and again. It's euro 96 isn't it? With Southgate, win first knock out match by penalty shoot out, lose second match by penalty shoot out just as everyone's got their hopes up, and we'll all blame Southgate again. Subconsciously it's what he wants to happen. Then Sweden go on to win the cup.
