What did Scholes do at international level that Gerrard hasn't? England get to the odd semi final and have won bugger all since 1966. What has either achieved internationally? The only stat you can look at objectively is goals probably:
Scholes - 14 in 66 apparances - Retired
Gerrard - 13 in 67 appearances - About 5 years left for England?
The ironic thing with this comparison is that Scholes started his playing career as a striker. He and Fowler were a prolific strike partnership for England at Under 21 level as I recall. He transformed into an excellent attacking, then holding midfielder. Gerrard's role is a lot harder to define these days but historically he is a central midfielder. He played the last 20 or so games of last season for Liverpool just behind Torres - in effect a second striker.
So they are both versatile. Scholes is either a crap tackler or a dirty cunt. Gerrard has lost the nasty tackle side of his game.
Both can ping the ball about nicely and have a grat long range shot. I would rather Gerrard in my team but Scholes has been a great player over the years.
The point made above that Scholes has played in a quality team for most of his career whilst Gerrard hasn't is a good one.
