Germany v England

Capello is kinda like the 12th man, he ain't quite on the pitch, but he might as well be.

I predict that England will just keep winning.

One thing I like about Capello is that he doesn't give a toss about the media, doesn't indulge them at all plus hes got no interest in becoming a celeb over here no appearances on chat shows etc everything about his approach is strictly professional.

Republic of Ireland beat Italy that year in some kind of football match that no Brit was invited too.

I'm ABE and proud of it. Nothing to do with English people, some of my best friends etc., but I don't think you Englanders fully understand how horrible it is to live with the endless triumphalism that greets the slightest modicim of sporting success. The drunken, shouting louts in the streets, the smug wankers on the TV, the tabloid headlines that'd make you think they'd won the bloody third world war.

It's really obnoxious, that's why I always want England to lose. Wales never go in for any of that rubbish. Maybe because we never win anything, but still.

That arguments really, really poor. What kind of nation doesn't celebrate success on the field? Why is it, when England celebrate, people with less succesful nations scoff at it and call the English arrogant and obnoxious and then half concede towards the end of an argument, maybe it IS cos we're less succesful. Fuckin poor man and quite anti English imo.

English support is always passionate, as are (probably, not sure after your post) the Welsh. Its about wanting your team to win, and loving it when they do!!

COME ON ENGLAND!!

Hey stavros, are you still on your 'carrick plus hargreaves = gattuso and pirlo" tip?

It's no secret that I've long been a fan of Carrick, and consider him to be more suited to the continental style of play which features more prominently in international competition. He's very considered and relaxed in play, will play the simple ball when needed, and perhaps uniquely in modern English seems two-footed (Rooney, Barry and Downing seem good with their weaker feet though). I'm not going to say he's as good as Pirlo because I can't remember anyone in that position who was, but he's easily the closest we have. Now the Pirlo-Gattusso partnership for me was the crux of Italy's win in 2006 and it works for Milan too. I chose Hargreaves as a partner because of his experience in Germany and broadly similar style to Gattusso, but whilst initially sceptical last night, Carrick and Barry looked very assured against a not-totally-shite-on-paper German side, albeit minus Ballack and Frings.

One of the quotes on football I love is from Johann Cruyff, that "football is a game played with the brain", and players like Carrick, Barry and Downing seem to follow that line. I think Rooney and Joe Cole would as well if they'd been born on the European mainland.

Something I also noted was that Spain were effective with a similar system last summer in the Euros, using Senna in the Gattusso role and Xavi as Pirlo. Interestingly, this meant that a crucial component of the "Big Four", Fabregas, was mainly consigned to the bench (take note Gerrard, Lampard, et al).
