Germany v England

Robinson
Richards, Terry, Lescott, Bridge
Wright-Phillips, Barry, Carrick, Downing
Crouch, Defoe

2-1 Germany.

Carson
Richards, Lescott, Terry, Bridge
Carrick, Parker
Walcott, Downing (both playing as proper wingers)
Bent, Defoe

The squad is looking a bit better in depth than it did a year or so ago. If you can have gerrard and lampard out and still have SWP (very exciting player), Walcott (shit hot at the moment), Barry (Class) and Carrick (reliable enough) that can't be a bad thing, and still have young waiting in the wings who could be good too.

Can see agbonlahor scoring.

With Downing, Wright-Phillips, Young, Agbonlahor and Walcott in there, surely this is game to play proper wingers who will beat their men and get to the by-line, especially with a Bent to get onto crosses and a Defoe to poach knock-downs.

I agree, Stavros. And it's a good time for these players - who are all good players (except Downing) to show they can do it.

It's quite a hard game to call. If Agbonlahor can get them on the break he could make a Walcott-in-Croatia type impact.

Maybe.

Have England really used wingers since WC 90, with Barnes and Waddle? Anderton was a winger, but his wide partner was McManaman who I don't think you could describe as one. My panchant for trying wingers is to try and peg back the modern full-back, who, as well as being a common attacking outlet, are often weaker than their predecessors defensively, i.e. more Cafu (still a great player but attack-minded) than Maldini.

We used a winger system to reasonably good effect at france 98 IIRC.

Richards and SWP linked up well last few times I saw them play for England, so quite a combo if they are playing down the same wing.

Agbonlahor and Walcott could be too hot for Germany to handle as there is pace there.

Germany's usual formula for beating England goes out the window, because England teams now contain too many variables to predict.

Added to this is England's 12th man, Capello. I bet he's got a plan.

To give the fringe palyers a chance to impress enough to make the final 23 without them being able to fuck up anything importent like a qualifying match.

Also a chance ofr the players to all train togeher and learn what capello expects at set plays and general orginisation type stuff.

Friendlies are importent as a training exercise.

They will learn a lot in two, maybe four training sessions!! And I'm sure Arsenal are well pleased at the timing of the friendly & losing Walcott for potentially 4-8weeks!!

Friendlies are important money spinners for the FA more like!!
