German or Italian Opera?

Which do you prefer?

the only worthwhile italian composers to have wasted their time with this flatulently literalistic bourgeois wank are afaik verdi, dallapiccola, maderna & berio as opposed to mozart, handel, stockhausen, berg, beethoven, krenek and probably many others within the austro german tradition so you're probably all correct ;)

Clear choice, German or Italian.

If it was a thread about which coulour do you prefer green or blue they would be the choices, green or blue, not yellow, red, purple etc.

I am very much afraid this is not the case though.. The thread starter provides other options in the poll, suggesting that a broader range of opinions regarding opera can be courted on the thread.

:)

I hate opera especially female opera singers who sound as if they are being tortured with a combination of heated irons and high voltage electricity.

But if you actually listen to them, some female opera singers have a command of the human voice that is beautiful to listen to, otherworldly almost.

ALL female opera singers sound like that to me.
You have the advantage of me there, sir. I, for one, have not heard even a small fraction of the total number of female opera singers.

I am too busy getting as far away as possible in order to stop the pain.

This would be so were not for the phrase "all opera" in one of the options.

Hmmm. Working class people aren't allowed to like it, then?

not if they are ideologically sound

opera is symptomatic of bourgeois logocentrism surely

a failing of class consciousness

capitalist roaders :(

You're just trying too hard to be Joe working stiff.

Dame Kiri Te Kanawa is a beautiful singer.

I came to appreciate female opera singers a while ago, when I heard a street beggar/performer doing some songs from Madame Butterfly.

Taken outside the usual confines of the tv set or the opera hall, you could just listen to her, and forget the other shit. It was incredible.

Not all music is rock and roll, or even the Irish Rovers.

I'd say so - one week it bourgeois opera, the next they'll be spitting in the face of the very workers they should be showing solidarity with..

Look at Andy Gilchrist.. acouple glasses of posh red wine.. and they're back at work the next week.

:(

As long as she isn't singing Opera she sounds OK, that goes for most female opera singers. There is something about opera singing that causes the pain.

Just for me, because you have such admiration for me, seek out Maria Callas' Mamma Morta. And Renata Tebaldi's "Ebben? ne andro lontana" from La Wally. And Delibes' Flower Duet sung by Mady Mesplé and Danielle Millet.

You're entitled to your opinion.

I love bagpipes: I know people who run for cover when they hear them.

No you can't. It is something about female opera singers that causes me physical pain. It is worse than bagpipes.
Oh. ffs. I missed this classic. You don't like bagpipes? At all? Ever?

That makes me think you've only ever heard them played by music hall comedians or drunk buskers.

You think wrong. I hate bagpipes with a passion. It is the actual sound, the skill or otherwise of the player is irrelevant.
