Geocities to close down! All sites to be taken offline!

most people don't tho

if you want to look up a random fact you'd generally google it and go to wiki

you wouldn't for a paper or anything, but just to find a random fact....

yes but that just means people are dumb

well at least if they belive everything they read without performing any sort of checks

if i read something a little odd on a wiki page i look at the discussion page or the edit history

nah. if you wanted to find out when the franco-prussian war ended or something like that and didn't have the book you'd just look it up on wiki.....

yes but so what if someone edited the wiki page as soon as it was thrown into question you would have to question it and then you would find out the wiki page was wrong

then you could edit it so it was correct again

it's a start tho

i do think it's a bit dodgy how wiki is becoming a 'common reference' for the world and it's not always that accurate. i spose everything is like that....

wiki is fairly accurate

and certianly on standard historical stuff it not only provides a digest it also provids a jumping off point for research into an area

accuracies or inacuracies pale in comparison to the problem of ignorence... if you are going to use a piece of information for anything more important than a pub quize you need to understand analysis of sources

I will welcome the back of geocities..

I have at least one site up there from yonks ago .. couldnt even find it again to delete it/them ..

Now if only Orange Broadband would let me get rid of the spam on their email I could make progress.

pink text on red backgrounds. Animated gifs, animated red test on yellow baackgrounds. the domain that you love to hate!

Its like someone has knocked down the historic school you used to attend :(

My first three webpages were on there.

  • A really crappy Personal Page - The olde worldie version of Facebook vanity.
  • A really naff attempt at a humour site
  • A popular maps site for people who played the discworld MUD which made me into a well recognised figure on the MUD.

When later I revisited these pages years later I cringed at what i had first thought was stylish website design.

Sad news :(

I made a site about Fonzie when I was 16 using geocities.
Anything interesting? I understand that his parents were Holocaust survivors (refugees maybe rather?) that ended up in rural New York state, which somehow puts a completely different spin on his being in Happy Days.

Mine is still there, I mainly used it as a links page, whatever computer I was on I would load up my Geocities and use the links I had provided myself.

Is this down to those BASTARDS OF ALL TIME, BT?

I've got a couple of Geocities sites - which of course aren't backed-up.

They're promising to offer a utility to zip your site up.

It's about time I got my finger out and bought myself some proper hosting and some domain names, but I hate the fact that people can look up your name and address ...

On second thoughts.. 15 megs of shitty Geocities with adverts versus 100 MB of k3wl wind-powered open source space for 60p a week ...
