They were made of brethyn, a traditional coarse Welsh cloth similar to sackcloth, but with none of the smoothness or comfort or associations with luxury.
You could tie a brethyn tie, certainly, but untying them wasn't so easy. Especially when another pupil has pulled it really tight around your neck
