That's pretty much OTM. Aphex Twin is probably the most well-known exponent. It seems a lazy label because it pigeon holes Venetian Snares, Amon Tobin, Autechre and Prefuse 73 all in the same genre, when they sound very different. The only common link is the lone white men working in home cupboard studios plugging everything into everything else.

On occaision I've felt a bit weird listening to music some chap's cooked up in his suburban bedroom ... Aphex Twin and Banco De Gaia certainly fitted that description

Yeah, I'm with you on that. It's my usual answer to those who critique my liking for Girls Aloud and (90s-era) Take That; I don't give a shit who performs it, they just perform it very well and it's fantastic music.
