General warning to posters

FridgeMagnet said:
Just in case nobody's noticed my numerous warnings: this forum is getting snowed under with personal spats and nobody seems to be prepared to stop. Therefore any the posting of any personal attacks risks the immediate hair-trigger banning of the poster.

In the hope of fairness. I would like to nominate myself to be banned as I have done all of this.

This is clearly the work of the ZioNAZIS such is their evil influence.

This has nothing to do with Fatah-al-Islam a new branch of the al-Qaeda franchise or Syria.

Every bad thing that happens in the World is because of the ZioNAZIS, they are worst than Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot all rolled into one!

Ed or Fridgy. I think this user should be banned for making anti-semitic comments.

If that's what you want, I'll be happy to ban you.

Anything to stop this ridiculous pissing about....

If posters continue to derail threads with such unprovoked, off-topic personal attacks, they will be warned and then banned.

Or to put it another way, play fair or lose the right to post.

Please.

I totally support this stance, all too often there's a cracking debate going on only to have been totally killed by some four page exchange of hatred between a couple of posters. Often just a single post from one of these folk is enough to kill all debate. It's really quite dull.

Yes, I believe it is. Compared to most, at the very least.
It's all relative. But hey, the internet has zero barriers to entry once you're on it, so if you don't like something, do it better yourself. It's, like, idealism but for real!

Not that I know you have any volunteers but have you considered having a "positive" moderator just for this forum?

Basically someone you can trust, who can come in and edit out abuse from posts, send warning PMs and do small time temp bans (24-48 hours) with an ability to pass up the food chain to a Full Time mod for a long time ban if the poster continues.

As long as you trust the person not to abuse the very small amount of power they have, it would force people to behave, and in the long term I believe the forum would be self regulated by the fact that posters understand here more then anywhere they would be censured for their action.

This is not my first forum, and I not read enough here to say that things have not got better since you first posted the OP. I do know that there are other boards out there that have political debate with very strict rules about personal attacks and abusive language, and they do still work. Though they are very actively moderated. I am sure some smart alec will tell me to go post there then but it isn't a comparison for criticism its a comparison to show it works, that it can be done....besides that Board is very right wing and it gets boring arguing with the same people.

editing peoples posts for 'politeness' is a recipe for disaster imo.

Well politeness is one thing, abuse is another. This was given in the context of cutting out personal abuse.

Calling someone a wanker is abuse.

Not saying Thank You is impolite.

Bit of a difference no?

Too fucking right.
A moderator with the sort of remit outlined above would shortly become everyone's enemy. Personally, I think the way we hav eit right now is one of the least bad ways we could be doing it. I think it provides for maximum freedom of speech without causing actual damage.

No discussion anywhere should be sourced from wikipedia, really (unless you're using it to find further sources, or are looking up a non-controversial topic!)
