Geeks I need you ;)

Haha! Yep, crucial again shows that it is a brilliant resource:

http://www.crucial.com/uk/library/128Mb_vs_256Mb.asp

I shall explain: The RAM you bought was a higher density type than your motherboard supported, other people on another site had the same symptoms with a different motherboard of the same era. Essentially what happens is that the RAM on each of the little chips on the stick is doubled, meaning you only need half the chips in total, which saves money. However your motherboard is only designed to use lower density RAM, with more chips than the current (or more recent) designs with the same capacity.

As for where to buy the RAM from... spending £70 upgrading the RAM is a waste of time for a pentium based machine (quoted from crucial), better to buy a second hand one (computer) for the same money off ebay. Ebay might be ok (for the ram), but you are looking at a rather speciality item (and who ever writes that sort of data in the description?).

I really don't have a clue i'm afraid :(

Lobster: shhh, i'm flouncing at the moment don't tell anyone i was here

I'm not spending £70 on this bag of shit machine

not just for memory, thats shit, I may as well just get 2 x 128meg strips and be done with it :)

cheers

oh ffs

*kicks pc*

how do I know if I'm getting low density other than having to fork out a load of money for it?

I'm not sure is the short version, to be honest i'm not 100% sure that it's down to density (97% ish sure).

You can get the 256mb version for £28 from Dabs,
quicklinx: 2LGXWS

If you were to use that and the old 128 then you'll have plenty of RAM for your machine.

I reckon you can probably return it - distance selling law, if nothing else. Tell them that although it works, you didn't know you needed single density, and they should understand.

As for the motherboard; well... there must be better Pentium 3 motherboards out there. I don't think it lasted that long as a chip but it'd maybe be worth having a look around to see if you can get some cheapo second hand stuff that gives you the extra capability. On looking into this problem I also found you can only put up to a 32gb hard disk in your current machine.

Another problem is that it may not be a standard form factor; it might be some weirdo HP motherboard size or case design, but I have no idea about that.

32gig max HD?

right thats it its becoming mince meat

cheers everyone :) I'll ring the company in the morning and explain, hopefully they will be ok

x

right, well after a little bit of an arguement (although not much, they didn't realise it was an internet order thats all) they have agreed to take it all back :) which I thought was very nice of them :)

please see my next thread for my next problem :D :o
