Gate Gourmet sack 500 Heathrow workers

Gate Gourmet working have also been striking in the US - and won!
story

btw - everyone knows layabout is a far-right reactionary waste of space who only appears on this forum to troll - can't we just ignore the sad little thing and actually get on with the discussions he wants desperately to derail.

Well hopefully the end customers won't be put out and the 250 odd contract workers that replace them won't be daft enough to do any thing as stupid.

Your compassion overwhelms me.

I may well be a simple rustic but from Gate Gourmet's point of view sacking the workforce when your company has had losses of £25 million in the last year may well be a plan.

Yep, but only if the sackings were legal.
If not Gate Gourmet won't have saved themselves a penny.

Me, I believe any company (whether it has unionised employees or not) that doesn't operate "by the book" deserves to take it all the way up the arse.

What they deserve and what they get may well be vastly different.

Sacking your workforce and employing temps makes no financial sense in the long term Tobes- temp staff cost more through an agency and care less about the work so therefore your customers are unhappy and eventually the contract goes elsewhere...
Shit, when I'm explaining simple capitalist ideas to Tobes then it just shows :p :D
Did someone call KE a socialist? :D

Is it certain that is what is happening in this case?
Yep...

"The union made it clear that the responsibility for any impacts on airlines and services lay with Gate Gourmet. "It is our workers who are being sacked and forcibly moved from their place of work," said Mr. Gold. "The company appear to have rejected the mediation approach, which had been agreed, and are trying to force through restructuring by sacking and starting again. That's treating people with contempt."
I'll mention this to my T&G rep next time we discuss how our union is being derecognised by our current management  x10

I would have to ask where they are going to get a large number of people with food hygiene certificates at short notice? (Not that I am suggesting phoning the food inspectors of course)

Unfortunately the market for those working in catering is fairly fluid due to short-term contacting so its likely that the majority of those temping have food hygiene certs, good idea though ;)

What the hell is up with you. I made a VERY serious point. There is a serious shortage of labour in any aspect of catering and finding several hundred people at short notice with food hygiene certificates is going to be near impossible.

no its not. you dont know what you are talking about, and are talking utter utter shit.

As you nearly always do, and you are nearly always pulled up on it.

Dont you mind making a complete fool of yourself?

Unfortunately anecdotal evidence would suggest otherwise :(

I would be VERY suspicious of the company being able to find several hundred peope with food hygiene certificates at short notice.
Hopefully so will food hygiene inspectors.

Lost the argument again I see.

Also, please don't post up pics that have no relevance to the topic.

Fucking wankers, when the choice is between negotiation or bullying they pull on the fucking jackboots. Different scenario - but Swiss Toni is being deducted 80% of his pay for the next 2 months because he wouldn't cross a picket line for 2 days last month. Clearly punitive and illegal and meant to scare off the rest of the workforce from similar action. But management are doing it anyway. Probably with the full support of twats like you layabout. Idiot.

No such word as "uncompassionate".

care to translate what you're saying for those of us who don't speak "Gibberish"?

that's fucking disgraceful. what utter arseholes

His union is going ballistic, as you can imagine - they've levied the 80% punitive charge on everyone that went on the (lawful) strike. Lots of people unable to make mortgage payments or suddnly find out they have no money just as they are about to go on summer holiday. Marvellous move for industrial relations there - people won't forget or forgive this one. We've had to take out a loan just to make ends meet for the next two months. I don't think there's any question we'll get some of the money back eventually - it just isn't legal what they are doing. But that will be too late for some people.

Meanwhile the bastards who did cross the picket line will no doubt reap the benefits of our sacrifices.

Those poor workers at the airport are in a far worse postion though. :(
