Stark Raving Sane
I like the idea of charcoal, but in my experience a proper gas bbq tastes the same and is a lot easier and convenient to operate. The taste of the "coal" is, as some have pointed out, the taste of the drippings going onto the hot coals and burning back up into the food. Those gas volcanic briquettes or charcoal - doesn't matter, taste is the same. Anyone who thinks it's the same as using your gas hob inside is deluded.
Of course, real fire is more manly... But it's well easier to fire up a gas bbq on a wet and windy day. Ongoing costs are a lot cheaper as well. There's not even anything stopping you using some wood chips if you want some smoking action as well.
