Any excuse to dig up the class war, I mean really what's that got to do with anything?
Southgate was a good footballing man. Fostered a decent youth policy, tried to play good football and would probably have got boro back into the Prem. I may eat my words, but I seriously doubt his successor will do any better. Boro are not a big club, never have been, to sack the manager now in the position they're in is folly.
I am very surprised by the timing of this decision. I wouldn't have been surprised if Gibson had let him go at the end of last season when he managed to get 'Boro relegated, despite significant levels of investment and expenditure on players. If 'Boro had started the season badly and were out of contention for promotion, I can understand why Gibson might have concluded that Southgate was a nice bloke but plainly not up to the job. But to sack the guy when 'Boro are fourth in the Championship is just plain daft in my opinion.
Interesting link to that forum ... never seen it before. However the fmttm forum http://fansonline.net/middlesbrough/mb/ is 100x busier than that (and the majority on there are barking mad and hate Southgate)
The reason Gibson decided enough was enough was the gates falling to 17k level mark there last night. Of the 17k in the ground I'd guess around 12k minimum, really, really wanted Southgate to go. At this point no matter what he does or how well the team played these fans would never get behind Southgate again.
Ok the team won last night, but the wheels (arranging his replacement) have been in motion for a couple of weeks now.
Gareth Southgate is a good honest bloke and the only boro captain to lift a trophy. Fans these days are very, very fickle and once Southgate completely (no going back) lost 50% of the fans the writing was on the wall.
I've always liked and backed Southgate... but even I was wavering towards the end and to be honest this doesn't come as a surprise.
Will whoever replaces him do any better ? Dunno, depends on what you think of Gordon Strachen.
Was on the local news tonight that Gibson had decided 3 weeks ago to sack him , i think the major factor was the 17,000 crowd , lowest for years .
$$$$$$$
It probably was just a business decision. Gibson is a businessman and he's put a lot of his own/his own company's money into the club.
Also as a businessman he also had a business plan. He hasn't just sacked the manager and then thought ... 'oooh who should we get in now ? can anyone interested send your cv's to ...'
The decision was made weeks ago around the 0-5 v WBA, 0-1 v Leicester time. Since then Gibson has been looking for his new manager, once that was in place Gareth would be leaving.
I wouldn't be surprised if Gareth had already been told that the game was up a couple of weeks back and Gibson had asked Gareth if he wouldn't mind sticking around for a week or two until the replacement was ready. Sounds daft I know but Gareth is a very decent bloke and Steve Gibson has been very supportive of Gareth over the last year or two. I think the two will part company as friends.
Its a shame because as a Palace fan I always have a soft spot for him although I never realised that Alan Smith had also been part of the 'borough set up.
Got a really close family friend who is a smoggie so always had a soft spot for them.
