Gareth Barry? Where did it all go right?

Nothing to substantiate it no! Heard it on BBC radio...probably Monday night if I recall correctly from a journo. It does seem to fit though as I remember Barry was in a bit of limbo a couple of years back...the Villa fans loved him but he never really seemed to have a settled place in the team. I remember he was seemingly playing centre back one week, then left mid, then left back then centre mid etc! Didn't his first England cap come under Hoddle at either left back or the left side of a back 3? Time has addled my mind!
It could be that MON said he wouldn't stand in the way of a big move...these things happen in football. And if the offer is of the value as has been reported then it's certainly comparable to the Carrick/Hargreaves fees recently paid for similar type players (positionally speaking!).

Fair enough. It just doesn't seem to fit with what I know of MO'N's man-management. He seems more set on building of team of loyal, hungry players than people hanging around for the next "big" club to take an interest. MO'N's position seems to be to let a unhappy player go, but not at any price, which is fair enough IMO.

I'm not sure if Barry's ever been in limbo, per se - he's certainly moved around a lot, from left-sided central defender in a back 3 under John Gregory, to left-back, to left midfield to central midfield. Wherever he's been, he's been a vital part of the Villa team over the last 10 years or so, and scored the best goal I've ever seen at Villa Park (a 25-30 yard equalizer against Spurs a season or two ago). I'd never say (as the OP did) that he's ever been the weak link in our side. Looks like he might be playing in Claret & Blue next season anyway, unless Liverpool/Arsenal pony up the cash pretty fast...

Starting to look increasingly likely. He's a professional and I don't doubt that he'll grit his teeth and get on with the job. The fans deserve an apology for the toys-out-of-the-pram interview in the Screws, but if he does apologise then I hope that the fans will rally behind him.

The thing that gets me is Mellberg ran his contract down and left on a free for a bigger club and he gets a standing ovation. Barry wants to do the same and he's even going to get a decent fee for the club and he gets booed.

Mellberg never slated the club or the manager, or signed a new contract & changed his mind half-way through. Also, Juve didn't run a very public tapping-up campaign.

When did Barry slate villa?. He was right to be angry at MON. Loads of managers have interest in their players and don't react by going into hissy fits and bitching to the press. As for going public, our offers for barry were first made public in Brum papers and Stevie's comments were made long after Barry had said he wanted to join liverpool.

Bollocks. He was not right to be angry at MON, since he is obscenely well paid, and already under contract at that club - why should MON waste his summer and European Championships whispering sweet nothings in his captains earhole?

His mindless bitching about MON not wanting to keep him are as fuckwitted as when Cashley made similar comments (when Arsenal failed to show him sufficient love), and almost certainly spring from the same kind of entirely illegal (if it wasnt for the big four, that is) tapping-up as featured in that whole sad, demeans-the-whole-of-humanity saga.

So let me get this right, there is an offer on the table from another club and the manager should never have a chat with the player about what the player wants, or what the managers plans for the future are?. Not even a five minute phone conversation?

Thats a remarkable extension of what you were previously claiming.

As it happens, aside from telling the player that an offer has been recieved that has not been accepted, there isnt much more that MON should do - his players will no doubt be clearly aware of what his plans are for the club, and given how MON has treated (and to a certain extent rehabilitated) Barry he probably already knew he was one of the most important players at the club. As if the reason that Barry wants to leave is "because MON didnt phone him up to remind him of how important he is".

Of course, its important to note that the RS - now that there is a reasonably clear value laid on any deal to make it a success - have seemingly backed off, despite having unsettled the player into making a public declaration of intent and leaving him swinging in the wind.

How DARE the Villa not sell their best player, on the cheap, to a club that is probably their main target in the chase for next seasons CL place. Its OUTRAGEOUS I tells you.

No, I was responding to your point as to why he shouldn't take five minutes out and talk to barry. He should.
If he claearly is aware then why did he come out and say the opposite?

Here we go, the usual bitter blueshite ramblings. The news that we put a bid in was first leaked by the brum press and I didn't see benetiz bitching on national tv about the transfer. This has all come from villa. They could have said "No, not for sale" but they've kept upping the price and talking to the press so that they can say we didn't put a high enough offer in, istsead of telling the truth, because they knew barry would be fucked off.

And how the fuck do you think 15-16 million for a player like barry is "on the cheap"?. You're deluded.

Maybe because the player wants to force a move? Maybe because his potential employers asked him to when they tapped him up? Maybe its because the RS refused (and still refuse) to pay the asking-price?

Ho ho ho. He is their best player, they are planning to get in the CL at your expense, why the fuck would they sell him for anything else than top money, especially to you? Besides, they didnt "keep raising the price", Benitez offered £10 million in cash+players first, then raised it to what might be worth £15 million, with addons and what the BBC have described as a non-standard payment schedule. Villa said no to both, and have said as close to publicly as possible what their valuation is. Benitez has thus far failed to respond to this.

Villa in the CL?. About as likely as everton. :D. :D

He's given long years of service to the club, they could be decent and not slap an stupid value on his head, they let mellberg go without bitching to the press about it, didn't they?.

And somebody has yet to point out where he has slated the club. I pointed out that he was right to have a go at MON when he has behaved like an idiot, bitching on national tv instead of talking to his player.

Yes, its outrageous that he should draw attention to Benitez's antics; the act of an idiot to oppose the tapping-up of his best player.

Personally i think the 2 closest threats to liverpool (bar everton) are Villa and Tottenham, and look at how benitez has unsettled the squads of both teams without spending a dime...

Granted he might get Keane, but thats yet to be seen judging by the way he is fannying around with Barry.

Thats my view on it, sew some disharmony in the closest rivals, and if you get a good player out of it, bonus.

No, your memory must be playing up, he went on tv and the papers and made bitchy comments purely because we bid for one of his players. He could have said no privately and left at that but he didn't. It was after he did this that Barry came out with his comments, the initial stuff was purely from MON.

... and if you believe that, you are even more deluded than the average RS.

Stop having ago at Martin, Barry said he wants to play champions league football and Martin valued him and said Liverpool can have him, But Liverpool are messing him around. Villa will still be a good team next season with or without Barry, that is how good a manager martin is.

maybe liverpool should have kept the bid private in the first place instead of splashing it all over the papers? talking of papers MON reckons in today's mirror that Barry has asked to be considered for villa's inter toto game today, if he plays how will this affect any transfer seeing as he will be ineligible for the CL?

It was leaked to the brum papers first. He won't be ineligible if he plays.

intertoto doesnt affect champions league or uefa cup eligibility.

As for everything else, as i understood it the first mention of barry goin to liverpool was in the liverpool echo???

And MON is damn right 'you want this player who is still well within contract, heres our price tag, oh you cant pay that, bye then'

as already mentioned look at what carrick an hargreaves went for and they are behind barry in the england pecking order now, so 18 million is about right and certainly not overpriced.

i think if i was barry now id be gettin fed up of all this shit and i'd piss of to spain or italy just to put an end to it :)

1. Barry's under contract.

2. Mellberg was not.

3. You're a bit ignorant, really, aren't you?
