i'd like to see the article which went with that headline!

The title is "Anti-Bangladesh HR confce in London: Complaints exaggerated, says George Galloway"

It might well be that Galloway was saying the ruffles at the conference itself in SOAS London were exaggerated.

Awami Leaguers shouted down pro-government and pro-BNPer speeches apparently.

he might have been...

but probably wasn't.

But if your theory is right which has him say the brutality of the Zia government is exaggerated that would leave him seriously out of touch with a large number of Bangladeshis in his constituency- who are strong religious Awami League supporters and accuse the government of organising the stabbings of students at university, using police to attack pro-Awami strikers back in May etc etc.

I'm sure this has been commented on before but I only just found it after coming out of work hibernation...

http://www.bangladeshobserveronline.com/new/2005/05/24/economic.htm

Newly-elected British MP George Galloway said today Bangladesh has become a unique and safe land for any investment and business, reports BSS....

The British MP said the fastest growing housing sector in Bangladesh has a bright prospect as the country has a number of talented engineers and developers beside a good housing policy.

George Galloway said Bangladeshi engineers and developers are very efficient and talented. They have established their efficiencies by building many multi-storied buildings both in Bangladesh and the UK, he said adding that he will take necessary steps for creating a good working atmosphere for Bangladeshi engineers and developers in the UK.

Stop press:

I think we might have the answer here is Galloway from a Q&A from Dhaka University in March 9:

http://www.iraq-news.de/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=461&Itemid=113

So I condemn political violence and there is political violence in Bangladesh and I condemn it.

Well, I didn't get close enough or long enough to be absolutely explicit about that but *I certainly did not find any evidence of any problem
with the ethnic minorities in Bangladesh. Certainly not.
When compared with neighboring countries where the minorities' even gigantic minorities like the Muslim population often has very serious difficulties. No, I traveled to many parts of Sylhet where there was significant Hindu population so far as I could see and they seemed to be leading their lives normally.

I don't like to get involved in internal politics in Bangladesh as I think the empire was here for long enough. They don't need to come and interfere in the internal politics. I have duty to condemn political violence; *I also have a duty to say that it should not be exaggerated beyond what it is.*

*Galloway*: Well, actually the welcome in Sylhet was overwhelming. I achieved something that often is not seen in this country. I managed to unite all the political forces in Sylhet virtually at every meeting. The BNP, Awami League, Jamaat-E-Islami, Jatiya Party, the alternative parties all the political parties were on the same platform along with me and supported my campaign for election in the *Tower Hamlet*. This was something that many people were astonished about.
I achieved something as national consensus in favor of my election in East
London. So I do think that it was a great achievement and the people of Sylhet welcomed me in huge numbers.

Relating to the bit in bold- Bangladesh has only 2 neighbouring countries- Burma and India- both part of the British Empire in their time like Bangladesh.

By making the claim he does that India and Burma's treatment of minorities is worse than Bangladesh's- he must be interfering in Indian and Burman domestic since the treatment of minorities is a live political issue in both countries.

I'd suggest it's an attack on the Indian government because certain states' Muslims as a group are victims of mistreatment.

And the claim that treatment of minorities in Bangla is not as bad as it is in India is one used by pro-BNP types- inspite of
http://web.amnesty.org/report2005/bgd-summary-eng etc etc

Condeming political violence- I suppose that doesn't go as far the blessed Iraqi resistance- does it?

I should add here that the BNP also has a religious element to it and is also supported by Bangladeshis in London.

Both parties are committed to secularism even though the BNP has been in a coalition of convenience with two Islamist parties.

And, it looks like, most of the cast of Bergerac.

I know it's the usual PR agent puffery, but in what sense can the first 'Audience with GG' show be described as the 'World Premiere'?

is it? you really are a useless little wanker, one of the least talented urbanites it's been my misfortune to encounter. what a sad little man you are.

Anarchist? My arse. Spurned lover is my guess.
guess again. and keep yr raddled arse out of it.

World Premiere

Did anyone actually pay their 12.50 / 11.50 unwaged last Thursday to report back? The Journal raved about it, though mentioned he spoke to 50 minutes, not long for your money really. He seemed to be pressing his old labour credentials, talking about ongoing discussions with the brownite wing of the party, which would explain who was in the audience, and his alleged dinner companion that evening.

Anyone care to enlighten us?

Just on the 'blood on the batons thing', I gather GG is due to speak in Bristol on the 6th of July, so I doubt somehow he will be on the frontline of the demo, unless he leaves the demo at lunchtime and heads down to the train station, it is a long way to Bristol from Edinburgh!

Temper.

Once someone has made over 400 (419 or so I think) comments on the same man...I think people are entitled to start wondering.

And you long ago passed the mark where people were just allowed to comment in general..probably around...50 or so...hell say 100 to be fair.

i feel it's past the point where i should have reminded you that it's better to keep yr mouth shut and have people think you a fool than open it and prove them right.

Yea. Over 419 is quite a lot. I think George should be told.

I wrote an email to him a couple of years ago and he wrote back within about 30 seconds. I've always liked him after that. I haven't gone on about him 419 times though.

So do you have hundreds and hundreds of pictures of him all over your walls - like that time when Alan Partridge accidently wound up at a "fan's" house?

That would be cool.

He'll be there. Helicoptered in just ahead of the first baton charge and when the cameras are lined up. Him and Tommy Sheridan will get carted off in the same ambulance.

If they pushed Galloway out of the helicopter from a great height he could do the whole movement a service and flatten several lines of riot police, thus allowing us a temporary gap to charge through to the hotel.

Come on GG, put your money where your mouth is!

Charge through to the hotel? Have you got a death wish?
