Galaxy Radio / Afiwe Station - Dead?

Not quite sure whether this fits under 'music' or 'London' and I certainly don't want to get smited by the mods for posting two threads...

Just wondered if anyone knew what was happening with London's Galaxy Radio (Afiwe Station) - the pirate (mainly reggae etc) that broadcasts/ed on 99.5 FM

not to be confused with the mainstream commercial station owned by Global Radio.

I'm too far out of London to get it on FM, and usually listen on the interweb - seems to have been dead for a week or so...

:(

I've not been able to get them on FM either, but they are back on today (albeit the reception isn't great).

Ah, DJ who's on now said that they're on the case trying to get internets back up.

thanks - hadn't noticed your post until now, i've not been around much the last week or so.

i'm off the edge of the (usual) FM signal

This on faceboink says they are having 'technical difficulties'

glad they are working on it.

bugger.

i was in london a few weeks ago and they were back on air, and with a new web address - www.galaxyafiwe.com - I forgot about this thread.

I'd not been able to get the ustream thing to work for a while before I started this thread.

I can get the radio playing online (it doesn't seem to like firefox) now although quality isn't great (background hum) - seems to be a talk show at the moment - not heard a station identity or anything like that yet.

There is a post on the faceboink group dated 10 July "Does anyone know whats happened to Galaxy?" so it's obviously intermittent.

Some of the Galaxy presenters (Musical Genius and Queen Genius) seem to have moved to www.oneharmonyradio.com which only seems to broadcast online.

It appears that they were recently raided - some form of court appearance has been announced for Camberwell Green Magistrates Court on 26 May 2017.

on air right now...galalaxy is an old station...seem armour plated to me. I'm sure they've had worse!

tuned in to a call in just now where the caller said Chinese people were the most genetically inferior of all the races and barbarians to boot. Went unchallenged.

its a great station, wonderful music, some inspiring chat and also some of the worst racialised politics its possible to have

It's awful, incredibly racist and homophobic from what I've heard about it.

Let's hope it does get shut down, and also how people get such warped opinions is beyond me.

I thought this was going to be about Galaxy, the commercial radio station at first. I remember the regular Roni Size and Krust sets from back in the day before it went all mainstream

Didn't realise there was a dodgy racially charged phone in pirate in London sharing the same name :hmm:

Theres a lot great about the station, but some of the afrocentric chat can occasionally slip into reactionary nonsense. never heard any homophobia on it, but it doesn't seem impossible. some brilliant music you just can't get on any other station, and some of the conversation is good too. I don't wish they would shut, i wish there was a wider listnership willing to challenge idiot voices. LBC has some utter twats on it too - its the nature of phone ins

to be honest, there's one or two presenters / shows I tend to try and catch when I can (found it by chance channel hopping in the car some years back)

I've never really bothered with the talk bits.

The racism and homophobia are awful (I'm gay myself) I should have been clear that it's how amateurish some of the presenters are is what i find funny to listen to.

It is a station with a clear agenda, the language, music, humour (more generally the cultural space) reflect those concerns. By its very nature it is hard to imagine such a station going mainstream - hence the involvement of non-professionals.

It has not occurred to any of the presenters to give details of the charge or charges faced to the same listeners that they are asking to court to support them.

However, it is believed that they relate to unlicensed broadcasting.

No, it's funny / borderline car crash and amusing to listen to.
Nor has it occurred to any of the presenters to tell those same listeners that the 'trial' that they have been mentioning for several months as taking place on 6 November 2017 has been 'postponed' - a listener had to phone in and do this for them this morning.

He goes does not go on trial at Inner London Crown Court on Monday 6 November 2017.

The trial concerned still has not taken place.

Are they off the FM these days? I'm not picking them up but I live less central. Still online though
The station has broadcast on an 'online only' basis since the August 2018 conviction of one of those involved in its management for offences relating to such management.

For those without internet access, broadcasts can also apparently be accessed over the telephone via a dial-up service.
