gagging for gin

Supposedly the 'Gin' from the olden days was a totally different thing to the stuff we drink now.

Anybody know any more ?

People used to drink it in pints, so I somehow suspect so.

But I've never managed to find out what it was like...

Fever Tree is the best tonic, definitely. Anyone who hasn't tried it hasn't lived, it's as simple as that.

Edit: According to Wikipedia, gin was 'frequently cut with turpentine' ...
Edit again: And 'somewhat sweeter than today'.

I have about 14 litres of that...

I used to keep a small bottle of Gordon's in my knicker drawer for emergencies, but it has to be said that gin and Mrs M are not a great combo. Last time I drank it was when I took a bottle of Bombay Sapphire to drfranni's and got so completely rat-arsed she had no idea how I walked* safely home. This was before I moved house and my housing was so shit that I tended to stay out drinking whenever possible. My life is far more sober now, I'm glad to say :)

*it may not have been what most people describe as walking.

Bombay, Tanqueray and Gordons...but I find most gin perfectly acceptable!

Any tonic is ok as long as it isn't diet, lots of ice and LEMON, definately not lime. Gin, lime and soda is rather nice though, if there's no tonic.

I just tasted my Saffron Gin again and realised what's so interesting about it. It reminds me of Benedictine. I think it's the angelica that does it. Drinking neat Saffron Gin is like drinking Gin and Benedictine

Just bumping this as I want to buy a good gin for a friend as a gift.

Any suggestions?
Depends how much you want to spend but this is lovely (and comes in a beautiful bottle and supports employment/social projects in a remote area) :).

I heartily recommend Old Bakery Gin for "special".

Goes especially well with Merchant's Heart Pink Peppercorn tonic which you can get in nice little glass bottles which works better as a gift than cans (they do other flavours like Hibiscus too, so you could get a selection, they aren't overwhelmingly expensive and big Sainsbury's or online sell those).

The gin itself is eyewateringly expensive but OH bought me a 35cl bottle with a selection of the tonics that I have mentioned in a gift bag for Xmas and I love the stuff, best gin I ever tasted. (It is also fairly local, if that matters to you or the recipient)

I think he would have got it from Borough Market as he was working there at the time.

EDIT: Because I got the name of the tonic I suggested wrong, had to go into the kitchen to check!

Have tried so many (worked in the industry) and they all blend into one after a while.

I really enjoyed this

Do prefer gin to just be gin personally. You can always add bitters or fruit if needed. This one is my go to bottle

I once attended a global Spirits awards judging panel. At the after drinks (there were a lot) the general feeling from the judging panel was that original London Beefeater Dry Gin is still the best.

Also although I haven't tried it, Silent Pool Gin has great reviews and I would love to get my hands on a bottle of this as it is produced very near to where I lived as a child in Surrey at a beauty spot that is dear to my heart. Also the bottle design is just beautiful.

They do some nice gift packs in their online shop, and I've seen it for sale in Waitrose. It is a bit (OK quite a lot) more affordable than Old Bakery if that was a bit too pricey!

Silent Pool is a good gin. Bit pricey (like most the small distiller gins) but decent enough for the money.

It's about half the price of the Old Bakery and I'm keen to give it a try! I admit that due to budgetary constraints most of my gin quaffing is at the budget end of the scale, but I do very occasionally get a more expensive bottle and make it last, have it on special occasions with a nice tonic etc. :) So next time I am in the market for a posher gin, I particularly want Silent Pool :)
