'Future Brixton' Pound Land

Pound Land

The important point to note about Pound Land (which is where Our Price then Virgin and then a women's clothes shop, which my daughters told me was rubbish, used to be) is that it appears that it might be an up-market pound shop - at least they seem to be have proper shop-fitters setting it up.

And for those who miss the late lamented Robill's, I can recommend the shop opposite the public lavatories in Pope's Road - I've never noticed its name.

But there's beedn a pound shop on that side of the street for years hasn't there? I'm a bit confused.
So that site is to be a new pound shop. Well its the kind of thing that does well in a downturn.

There is a pound shop type thing along the road on the same side but it was burnt out a few weeks back.

There used to be Robills where Sainsburys is now which I still miss sometimes.

Have you not been to Brixton for a while now?

hehehe. Just noticed your post. Snap. :)

Do they have rubbish pictures in frames a bit bigger than a poscard? I need some.

I have not found that to be the case. :( Though I never allow myself to go down the biscuit aisle in the likes of Tescos on the rare occasion I go there.

Thinking about it that's a good thing. I can devour a box of teacakes in minutes. :o

waitrose! they do the dark chocolate ones and snowballs too.

I go there virtually every day, but I use the tube, woolies, go to the Albert and that's about it. It just shows how unobservant I am.

Well that pound shop that you notice has been there for ages and if you don't go in there very often then you wouldn't observe it really would you? :D

Why would you want a pound shop to be upmarket? Beats me?

Brixton has a Curry's?

How have I not noticed this?

I need some new consumer durables.

I've never been in a Waitrose, not sure I've ever seen/noticed one anywhere.

there's a waitrose in Balham that used to be a safeway, its an easy bike ride from Brixton!

I don't have a bike.

It's up effra road, indeed, on the way to the Hobgoblin/Hootenanay
there's a Halfords there too. :)

It's worth going just to see quite how badly a shop can be run.:D:rolleyes:

Although the Halfords can give it a run for its money - I tried to buy a bike lock there a few years ago, they said they couldn't sell me one because someone had stolen the keys to the cabinet with the locks in  :D

In hendo's defence, he is very old, and the pound shop which has just closed down is very close to the new Poundland. :D

They're right - it was full of tat.

I know the shop you mean - I bought fairy lights there two Christmases ago which are still going strong.

I am hoping that Curry's closes down and they open an Aldi in its place.

Literally tens of pounds worth of damage was done. So we need a new one. Of course, I'd prefer it if an organic butchers and grocers replaced it. One that's open to 10pm 7 days a week. Of course.

But there's a recession due. We can't afford organic :p

What can we replace Halfords with?

Luckily I rarely need to go there cos I get lubes and stuff at the German Swedish French place on Acre Lane; indeed if you have a VW, Volvo, Renault etc check it out.
If I do need a Halfords product I go the Croydon one which has decent stock levels and staff that talk.

Of course, though 8pm would probably be sufficient. :)

That said we got our first delivery from Abel and Cole last week.

Meanwhile, in Herne Hill, they have lost a chicken-snack-shack and gained a posh fish stall, they have a posh bakery, and a posh deli, as well as a posh florist. And the posh second-hand-french furniture store that used to be in Coldharbour Lane has moved there too.

The gentry has moved to Herne Hill.

Isn't the chicken snack shack still there? The fish stall replaced Kennedy's afaik. To be fair, there are loads of shops in HH that have been there for years, for example the proper, old-fashioned cobbler, the hardware shop etc.

The guy who runs the second-hand furniture shop (who is very nice) told hendo that "they" had made it impossible for him to trade in Coldharbour Lane. He didn't specify who "they" were but you don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to guess.

That's horrible :(

The more recent chicken shop is gone. The MFC is still there for some reason.

The mad old lady in the hardware shop still keeps going. Someone I knew once tried to buy something in the middle of the afternoon. He had to bang on the window to get her to let him in because she'd forgotten to unlock the door.:DGod knows how she stays open.

Brixton is obviously more upmarket and posh than Hocus Town. We had a Pound shop for a while but it closed down. Now we have a 99p store with the logo for the 99p being a rip off from the ice-cream 99 logo.

I went in there last week and bought something. It was very strange getting a penny change from the pound I proffered. I accepted it of course. You posh types from fancy Brixton would probably have refused it with being used to the elite Pound shop you have.

Dr Watson writes: who are the 'they' he is referring to?

She's very inventive with her pricing... nothing's marked or priced up, so she tends to invent the cost depending on whether she likes the cut of your job or not, whislt humming gently to herself. :D

And furniture man must be making much more money now - those West Dulwich types aren't going to venture that far into brixton for his old shop. That and the prices he charges too...
