Funky Fucking House

Are we talking stuff like Phuture, Lil Louis, Blake Baxter, Marshall Jefferson, Ralphie Rosario etc here or are we talking about stuff like Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, Loleatta Holloway, First Choice etc or that more modern rubbish mentioned earlier up the thread? ;)

Whatever era you're thinking of I nominate First Choice - Let No Man Put Asunder for one of the most storming house tunes ever.

It's the modern rubbish the punters want.

There's a good early Tenaglia tune called The Look, which is house music that's funky, bit I think it's probably too old.

Ah right, well, in that case I'll bow out of the thread. :)

The problem with funky house is that there's hardly any funk in it. Lots of syncopated disco maybe, but fuck all funk.

And what's funky about that Roger Sanchez song? I absolutely love it - brings back some very happy memories for me, and is a lovely lovely tune (made better by the fact that it's a Toto sample). But funky? No chance - it glides, but there's no funk in that fucker.

Yeah I see wht you mean, I was just listening to a few oldies and they are pretty much syncopated disco but now I'm listening to I Got My Mind Made Up by Instant Funk and while it's still got a disco feel to it, it's pretty funky too.

I'd agree, but would also say proper proper house made with love and brutality can be funky as fuck. Though our definitions of funk might differ plenty.

that can't be funky house, i like it.
It's not, is it? I'd have it down as New York dirty house, with some mostly borrowed funk.
Funky house to me is all that add some vaguely funk stylings over a dead straight house beat with no proper deep down dirty twisting bass or evil syncopation stuff. As funky as a prawn cocktail.

Mousse T vs. Hot n Juicy - Horny
Boris D'Lugosch pres. Boom - Keep Pushin' On
NuYorican Soul feat. India - Runaway (Mongoloids from Space remix)
Byron Stingily - C'Mon Get Up Everybody
Bucketheads - The Bomb
Passenger of Shit - Fucking Dogs Turds Up My Vagina

 :D

*PUKES*

Oh hang on.....Fucking Dog Turds Up My Vagina is pretty good, 1/6 Sam

well i set about 10 of these tunes to download while i was out last night.

to be honest, i think funky house fans can either not bother with Juke Joint or listen to something else for a change, but it's fucking filth

I'd have thought any of the recent Hed Kandi compilations would be a good place to start...

once maybe.. but not nowadays, can be very hit n miss and contain the sort of stuff that people on here seem to dislike so vehemently.. like most music genres you have look a bit harder to find the good stuff...

*thinks about convincing editor to give me a set at offline to spread the good word*

When you say 'wishy washy' you're not talking about the original Ten City version, are you?

No the version I put there - the original mix of that one up there not the Ten City one is a bit wishy washy, but there is one with more bass, louder strings etc.....

Funky house and US Garage if done right can be great.

Oh dont forget that funk house mix of "Let the sun shine in" either :)

in the interest of fairness maybe you should get some psytrance on the playlist as well Dub... ;)

we have Age of Love. That's all those fuckers are getting.

Anyway, this is a bar, not a flouro-painted sweatlodge, so they wouldn't show up anyway.

The guy who lives upstairs from me is a funky fucking house DJ. Lovely guy, but when it's banging through the floor at 180db...

Like mainstream chart music, the odd decent tune comes through once in a while (Michael Gray's 'The Weekend'; Gadjo's 'So Many Times'; Deep Dish's 'Flashdance', etc.) but IME the vast majority of it is just re-tooled '90s handbag, tarted up for the ever-diminishing Ibiza superclub brigade.

True in the early days (Beach House 1&2 have some utterly beautiful tracks) but now they're little better than 'Ministry Presents The Same Old Shit XXX'...wich is a shame.

There's nowt wrong with a wee bit of disco house, especially in the summertime :)

funky house is basically a short hand label for the chart bothering sort of music that has been mentioned on this thread already.

I'm a techno, D&B and breaks person but I must confess I enjoy a dance to a bit of funky house at times and I don't mind admitting it!

we need zog on ere as well, praps he could suggest some 'deep and slightly funky'

I can never really get to grips with the difference 'tween funky - deep-tech-disco and all them other houses (apart from hardhouse which even my mum knows)

....but I knows what i likes.

some of the stuff that might fit the bill:

Rhythm plate pres yse – yea a tell yer

Dj Sneak Feat. Bearwho - Fix My Sink

The Feelgood Factor - The Fonk Train (Disco mix)

Digs Woosh & mr ski – rumpfunk (original mix)

Blaze – My beat

Inland Knights – wait a while

Fred everything – fall into you

Alison limerick - Where Love Lives

Sunshine Anderson - Heard It All Before (Ben Watt Lazy Dog mix)

Gabrielle – we don’t talk (Cleveland city mix)
