James Brown as good as invented funk and got it tight like no other but is he himself the funkiest? I think he's too uptight to be the funkiest man... music aside he had a lot of anger and tension in him that rules him out from the top spot.

Sly Stone at his most stoned was a funk phenomenon, but on the whole i think he's got some other sides to his character beyond just funkiness...whereas:

Once Parliament turned into Funkadelic and the pscyhrock got left behind George Clinton & Bootsy Collins both embodied funk and continue to do so to this day...bootsy's solo stuff may not be up there with the funkadelic material but his legacy goes deep.... to me its a tie between George and Bootsy - there can be no divisions on the mothership :)

....although having said that I think maybe Bootsy just edges it...they're both still going strong, but Bootsy never stopped making new music, never stopped living the funk...ah i dont know, dont want to take anything away from George - saw Parliament last year and they still smash it

Perfect for this thread, video of Bootsy talking about the difference between playing with James Brown and Funkadelic

This thread badly needs some Chuck Brown y'all.

I gather he passed away last year, which I hadn't heard before. RIP and respect, the man invented an entire genre of music...
great footage of a spontaneous street party in his honour hours after he died

Just a bump to plug my PFUNK mix, which is sounding nice in the sunshine

I picked Jimmy Brown what with him being "The Godfather" 'n' all.
I have to admit to while know the music of Sly I don't think I've ever seen any footage of him playing live

this is the family at Woodstock, by far the best act there imho . Apart from the who . All the rest was a load of hippy wank . But this just blows me away .
