Funding a social science PhD?

Us academic types are so polite aren't we.

"I'm stating something, but I know it's a generalisation"

"Yes, and I know what I say is a generalisation too"

"Didn't want you to think I was stating something too boldly"

"oh no, not at all sir. Here, have a nice cup of tea"

"why thank you"

and so on ... :p

Much as I agree with your thesis on this, this and this point, I have to say your interpretation may well be in error here, and I think you have failed to see this, that and t'other, and I would question the utility of your approach to etc etc blah blah blah.

;)

Oh wouldn't journals be much more interesting places if they had a section at the back for flame wars

I thought that was called the reviews section. :D

Ah, touché. But they're just so darned polite about it. What we need is something where the author can respond:

"but you just didn't get it, did you, you cnut?"

"I weighed up the evidence and ...."

"look, you're just not listening, nobhead. I'm right, you're wrong."

"tosser"

Oh I don't know. I've seen some thoroughly vitriolic reviews in historical journals.

I'm starting as reviews editor of a journal from this summer, actually: I might have to make sure each edition contains an outrageously aggressive review or two, just to give people a laugh.

YAY! Now I'm just boasting but I got the ESRC funding! YAY! Don't need to worry about other sources anymore, I'm over the moon at the moment. I'm still shaking after a bottle of wine to calm down from the news!
