Full of Christmas sneer

I am astounded on a daily basis by the hypocrisy displayed on these boards. On the one hand, there is a desperate desire for equality, on the other, naked hatred of those whom Urban, in its infinite hypocrisy, deems to be 'undesirables'.

I am no supporter of inherited privilege, it is both directly and indirectly responsible for a lot of the problems that the nation faces, however, if it is wrong for 'downward sneering' to be extant, then it is also wrong to indulge in 'upward sneering'. Both are wrong, if you have any sense of justice.

My comment to Dottie was meant as sarcasm, but the basic premise stands, you cannot criticise the 'standards' of the card company, whilst indulging in the same behaviour. To do so is hypocrisy.

Pot vs kettle. If sneering is wrong, then that works both ways.

I don't have a problem with the impotent 'class warfare' on Urban. It has given me some moments of amusement at times. What really amuses me though is the inability of the left to get its fucking act together, stop the internal bickering, restrain their egos, and form a party that people will vote for. Do that and get elected, then you can do something about the rampant inequality. Don't do that and your arthritic nonagenarian fingers will still be spouting impotent internet bile, and the inequality will continue.

Blair, odious and loathsome cunt that he is, succeeded in making Labour electable again (then promptly took the Labour party into a position that mirrors the shit that is in government now). Does the 'real left' have no one that can pull people together, and get a socialist government elected? Never thought I'd hear myself say this, but we need a socialist government. We really do.

Pot vs kettle implies that there is some kind of meaningful equivalence between the two groups, which I'm not seeing. You think it doesn't matter who's being sneered at for which reasons? You don't think there's a difference between kicking up at those with power, and kicking down at those without it?

Clearly you do have a problem, since you decided to complain about it.

I certainly wouldn't mind a socialist government. But I think the barriers to such a thing coming about are due to far wider and more complex reasons than a tendency to make swipes at those further up the social ladder.

The 'problem' with the left is too many flavours. Too much choice, and choice dilutes the vote.

Is there no leading figure that the left can get itself behind? I've pretty much given up on politics (that said, I will be voting and campaigning for Labour at the next Scottish elections), so don't really know who the 'big beasts' of the left are at the moment. Remember, once you are elected, then you can change things, unelected, the inequality goes on. I suppose it comes down to whether those on the left organise and get elected, or, continue as 1000 splinter groups and lose every deposit lodged.

I'd agree that the splintered state of the left does not help matters, although political unity does not necessarily require any kind of "leading figure" as you seem to intimate. I think a lot of people these days are far too cynical to be taken in by that "great man" crap. Meaningful engagement on a mass level would seem to be a direction with more potential traction; people like to feel that they're actually involved.

But- what exactly has this got to do with ripping the piss out of toffs and pretentious middle class types?

Oh jeez, you are doing this.

What are the power relations here? Are they equal? Or does one class have more power, more resources, more wealth?

I would say I won't be getting my cards from c!intons anymore but I don't anyway as card factory is a damn site cheaper and a lot better.

Sort of same here - I get cards from independent shops & Sainsbury's.

I used to buy the odd card at Clintons but won't be doing again after this piece of blatant & sneering class snobbery. Hope that applies to a lot of people. I'm encouraged by it being outed and taken down so quickly, though.

It seems to be harder and harder to buy decent card at all tbh, was shopping for birthday cards with a mate for a card for her dad and they all seemed shit unfunny and vaguely sexist

this will be why I don't buy occasion cards anymore. An artist freind of mine has some of her work printed on cards, and i'll buy a handful whenever she does a discount to clear the way for new stock.
