Thought you might be interested in seeing these F11 night shots.
All were handheld with minimal filtering.

They clean up pretty well for a compact camera, although you'd be hard pressed to print them past A4.

Still pretty amazing for a compact though - I don't think there's any comparable cameras on the market now that could perform so well at 1600 ISO.

What's the F11?

(nice pix btw!)
Sorry, it's the Fujifilm F11 compact camera - a fairly cheap digicam (£250) that's near identical to the F10 but with some manual controls.

I'll edit the thread title now.

Ah I see...looks nice, I'll be in the market for a compact in the new year too.:) What memory card type does it use?

yeah, me also thought you took em at f11 :D

they look superb for a compact, great pics as well

good work ;)

There's the rub - it's the somewhat obscure XD format, only used by Fuji and Olympus.

Fuji are currently offering a 512MB card and case with the F11 for £265 which ain't too bad though.

Cheers.

I have to say the Lumix LX1 spanks the arse off the F11 with its daytime shots, but the Fuji rules when it comes to night shots.

I wish I could afford both cameras!

Oh right, yeah that is a bit of a pain; my PC comes with an 8 in 1 card reader but it doesn't support XD (like most it seems...) which means battery draining usb cable transfer...

Ah, but there's the reverse rub: the F11 has an outstanding battery life - up to 500 shots on a single charge!

I've got one of these, and although I'm not nearly as good a photographer as editor, I'm pretty pleased with it so far, for what it is. I haven't actually tested the battery life, but I wouldn't be a bit surprised if it isn't around 500 shots. I've recently used it every night for a week away, with no suggestion of running the battery down. (Which is just as well 'cos it takes about 4 hrs to recharge from zero)

So Ed, you bought an F11?

I haven't really used ISO1600, but here are some FUJI F11 night pics taken at other settings:

ISO 200, F8 1/2s

ISO 200, F8 1/2s

ISO 800, F2.8 1/42s

I think the F11 is pretty good at day shots too:

Oooh nice pics. Can I have a closer look? Some 100% crops maybe? (I guess the full size images would take ages to load)
sure, here you go. no post-processing so note the not-so-hot quality of the ISO800 one. perhaps noise ninja would sort that?

SD or SM<->xD converters. Sure I saw one down Maplins for less than a tenner. xD slots into an SD sized holder.

I use an SD<->CF convertor for my fuji, letting me use SD rather than the supported CF/SM so I can use my palm T3 to also review images

Aha! Cheers for that! :)

With a bit of luck, I might be selling a load of my NYC pics next week and if I do, I'm going to get the LX1 to complement the F11.

Now, that would be a winning travelling combo!

Here's one on ebay, 7 quid all in. Note the 256Mb upper size limit though (may be related to SM limitations).

FWIW my SD<->CF II one works happily with a bog-standard 1Gb SD card, but I ended up importing it directly from Steve Irwin land a couple of years ago. Hopefully you should be able to source them from a local supplier today.

Here's the xD version of the one I have from there, a crowd called Mittoni. It's half the price of the Fuji adapter that does the same job.
