Tax all addiction, pay for better services!!!

No duty on green fuels though, that IS outrageous!

Align incentives for the optimum. :)

None or less?

Depends on what you call green really.

I might favour peoploe switching to bikes or public transport overdriving a green car and wish to use incentives to act accordingly.

When hurricane Katrina impacted on US refining capacity and started to drive up prices, the Polish Finance Minister's response was to reduce the level of fuel tax so that economic growth would not be affected. In the same scenario, Gordon Brown decided to do nothing other than urging OPEC members to increase production and invest in additional refining capacity.

Of course, this all happened in the real world (as opposed to the cosy fantasy world of theoretical Economics).

Ah the joys of trying to debate with Cobbles, the global warming conspiracy theorist. :D

By my reckoning, even with that new record price we had last week the government is actually taking ~0.3p less tax per litre in real terms than it did in Oct 03 when the duty was set at 47.1p.

Whether it was 65% of the price of a litre in 2003 or 64% of the price of a litre in 2006, the proportion of the price of a litre of fuel that passes to the exchequer is obscene.

10% or 15% on top of the cost of fuel would be reasonable (plus VAT on top, I suppose). I would mind less if the huge revenue collected in this way was actually spent on improving the public road infrastructure but only a tiny proportion ends up being ploughed back into the road network.

You're about as sharp as a marble you are.

You are the one that started to bring subjective stuff into the discussion so I just threw in some more to illustrate how trivial and pointless your earlier statements were.

I guess its just that the points you have made are so bad and based on such flawed and irrational concepts that its very difficult to construct an arguement that challenges them on the same level.

Massive bumpage.

I suspect someone did a search for posts started by Cobbles to see what they could dredge up... :hmm:
