I always keep my tank topped up - you never know when the fancy'll take you to head out for a decent burn-up and having to top up on the way or after an hour just spoils the mood.
I tend to fill it up then let it run nearly empty. Used to only ever put £10-£20 in at a time when I was skint, so keeping it topped up isn't something I've got into the habit of doing. Also, having a low fuel load makes me think about Formula 1 and now I'm convinced that the car will use less fuel when the tank is emptier than when it is full.
I'm sure it's just an illusion, but it seems to go a lot further when the tank's been filled to the brim. But with a tankful costing nearly £50 even for my ickle car, I'm doing that less and less.
Surely the trick is to fill to the brim once when you're a bit flush for some reason, and then top up every day again, so you're always at 80 to 90% full, meaning that you could escape to Spain if you needed to, and that you never chance running out, but you drive the same and spend the same cash.
A bit of a bugger when you come to sell the car though!
