Fucking tube weekend closures

The Rotunda? It's rather good.

It moved out of the Rotunda and into Woolwich Arsenal - just down from the Southeastern (+new DLR) station of the same name - in 2001 and under its new branding of Firepower! has had one makeover since then already

To be fair the tube is littered with signs stating there working to improve journey times and that work is ongoing on the entire network

Yeah but if you look at the schedule for the next 6 months, it's mainly the jubilee line. And a couple of posters with 'NEW! Improved journey times' on the platforms or on the carriages wouldn't go amiss. Bloody hell, I should work in comms for TFL, I'm wasted in professional services

Can you walk to West Hampstead for Silverlink/Thameslink, or Finchley Road for Metropolitan?

I can go to West Hampstead but there are about 100 steps down to the platform which is a bit of pain with the baby. And the met line is also down

I can go to the other end of the Kilburn High Rd and get the Bakerloo line but it's a real faff and adds about 30 mins onto my journey each way. So I'm driving to the country to visit my mum and dad tomorrow instead :D

WELL if you do make it West Hamsteezie let me know - I'm there about three days a week.

It's a victory for global warming!

Some of the Jubilee line is quite new - unfortunately a lot of the work is having to be done on the new part, because the tfl powers that be just didn't forsee it being used as much as it is today. Currently, the way the track and signals are organised, only one train at a time can go through the long stretch of tunnel between Canada Water and Canary Wharf. This leads to a huge backlog of trains at peak times, which is why gaps between trains are longer on the Jubilee line than for other lines, and why many trains end up terminating before their advertised destination, so they don't add to waiting times to go through that particular portion of tunnel.

Much of this is due to lack of forward planning when the line was extended. After the extension, cheap housing at the eastern end of the Jubilee line suddenly became feasible (and far far more affordable than most other parts of London in zone 3) for people working in the centre of London, and demand increased far more than had been planned for.

A large part of the works going on is to change the track and signalling in that one stretch of tunnel - which will increase the number of trains per hour at peak times by around 50% (and by around a third when averaged out over the day). This will be an absolute godsend to those of us living at the east end of the line (especially those who have to get to the other side of London for work), but it has been a complete bloody nightmare for those who have to work weekends in the meantime while they upgrade the line.

The worst thing is that sometimes they don't co-ordinate well and take out both the Jubilee line and DLR in east London at the same time, and the replacement bus takes ages because there is no direct route by road, it has to go through the Blackwall tunnel - absolute bloody nightmare - I just wish they would co-ordinate to take each line out on alternate weekends, rather than leaving us with absolutely NO rail based public transport every other weekend!

Jubilee, Metroplitan some District closed today. Did a nice canal walk to Kings Cross. Keeps u on your toes and might get to see some bits of London that are ignored but is a pisser to get from A to B.

There has been problems though with the new Jubilee stretch of line pretty much right from when it opened. There's always been failure and delay on that line

Ironically, I had loved living on the Victoria in Walthamstow, as it was so reliable, and was worried about moving to Northern Line land. Ever since I left Walthamstow there's been weekend and evening closures, and the Northern Line has actually been OK round our way. Luckily, the tenant who lives in my former house works locally, so I don't think she and her family use the tube an awful lot, otherwise I'd feel rather bad for them.

We went to Oxford yesterday. Getting to Paddington from Bethnal Green took over an hour and a half. It would have been less time if Liverpool St tube had had signs up about the closures; as it was, I ended up going all round the houses. The train to Oxford was also messed up, and the entire journey door to door took nearly five hours. Coming back today it was an hour and a half for the whole way. It's almost like they want me to travel at peak times - I won't go off-peak again.

It exactly like they only want you to do that

I have just remembered that I have invited people over this weekend but of course they won't be able to come because there's no fucking tube

aha so there is a logical reason for the Jubilee closures!

I work unsociable hours in North Greenwich and after being stuck in traffic for an hour on a crappy rail replacement bus every other Saturday night, I could never figure out why they need to do upgrading works on a stretch of track that's only a decade old.

What's the nature of the bottleneck there anyway? Surely two tunnels of track are two tunnels of track?

To cut a long story short - the Jubilee line was supposed to have from new a gee whiz "moving block" signal system. This wasnt possible for the promised NY 2000 shindig so they lashed up a traditional fixed block system to get the line opened and to spare Tony Blaire a failure.

They are now retro fitting a new system which gives the extra traffic capability - so short term pain etc etc ......;)

Epona - didn't see your post earlier - thanks very much. That makes complete sense and explains why when there is a problem there it fucks up the whole line in both directions!

aaaah, so there is an unusually large signalling block through that tunnel section? that would explain it.

This weekend they are taking the piss. Closures part or otherwise:
Central, District, Metropolitan, Jubillee etc. In fact the only good service is Piccadilly and Victoria.
How did London win the Olympics?
