fucking ipods

Really? Weird. Well I supposed once you get used to it it might be usable. But nothing is immediately obvious, i prefer winamp.
You always prefer what you know. Give it a chance and it might grow on you, otherwise stick with winamp and be happy.

The genius function is really nifty btw, definitely try that out.

I don't think itunes is too bad, but then I used Sony Sonicsound or whatever it was called before and that was disasterously bad. The worst thing about itunes IME is the new genious thing, which takes 40 minutes to download something mysterious whenever I plug the ipod in and doesn't seem to achieve anything.

Also, you can get around itunes locking your songs to one ipod by installing idump (freeware) which lets you back the entire library up as MP3s with no DRM. There might be other ways but I doubt they're as easy.

Basic question from a thickie: I've been using i-tunes for years but I recently noticed that most of the tracks I have on there are somehow duplicated on Windows Media Player. Does this mean that each track is stored twice on my PC and therefore using up twice the memory?

your DRM'd tracks from the itunes store are locked to a maximum of 5 devices, including other computers.
any other files are not locked in any way whatsoever

No. These applications have databases which store information about your music. The music itself resides in normal files on your disk. Like there are multiple telephone directories, but each phone number only exists once.

:) Many thanks Crispy.

Hey, my 100th. post, and a smiley to boot.

I'm liking Songbird a lot at the moment. Especially the way it grabs loads of extra info on the band for you to peruse should you so wish...
Yeah - I've only had a little play but it was great having the lyrics and all the band info appear beneath the tracks - and there's an option to tell you if the band are playing in your area too!
