Fucking Indie Culture

Yeah, I just noticed that. And the Monarch is apparently doing nothing whatsoever that night. :(

there'll be something on at the monarch - londonnet just haven't updated their site, that's all. you could always give the venue a call... - or maybe there's a website. i think there's a night called transmission there as well, which is more electro indie mash up etc, but with the hits played upstairs. might be worth looking into.

I'm a bit confused with all this aggression at Indie clubs, it was always full of people who read books and that.
Aggressive masculinity definatley out, what went wrong Georgie?

Trend whores always jump on the band wagon 5-10 after it peaks, same with hip hop. They will never join in when its still in development as if the scene doesnt amount to anything they will have alienated themselves from the other trend whores whos high opinion they seek.

If there was any need of a reminder of why I've got no fucking time for the indie scene anymore it was tonight.

Persuaded to go to a Koko "Club NME" thing with some truly abysmal bands playing. And if that wasn't enough, it was populated by some of the most obnoxious individuals imaginable.

As per usual, the "don't care/to cool for you" attitude was in abundance, and translated to over a dozen instances of some idle cuntpipes treading on my foot, shouldering me as they were trying to get past me and without a hint of an acknowledgement let alone and apology.

Went to the bogs once to see some wasitcoated wanker pissing in the corner of the room for absolutely no good reason (given that the urinals were fully operational and had plenty of room) - doubtless he saw no problem with the fact that someone less fortunate than him would of course have to clean his mess up eventually. But then he'd just be some poor, worthless Mexican, so who cares!? Where's my hair straightener? - I was so pissed off by this point that I slammed the door right into him whilst exiting (and I'm not usually a violent guy).

And to top it all up, at my final attempt to savour the experience by trying to have a bop (a Blitzkrieg Bop even, the one saving grace of the evening!) on the dancefloor all was swiftly undermined by some prat in the crowd throwing a lighter which landed on my forehead. Given that it was too dark/crowded to even stand a chance of singling out the fucker responsible and gouge his eyes out with it I decided to leave ASAP. And that was that.

I honestly feel embarrassed to be in the same generation as these people. What a bunch of spoilt, arrogant, image obsessed, uniformed and perpetually narrow-mind prejudiced hypocrites! It staggers me how utterly repellant these people are - I've seen drug dealers at squat parties with a better sense of decorum, just what is going on!? Please, all you "classic indie" people on here, please tell me it wasn't always like this. It can't have been, surely?

I go to this regularly now. I used to hate it like you and I was dragged there about 5-7 times before I liked it. I thought: shit music, badly mixed on a bad sound system, irritatingly conformist indie kids, and most importantly I couldn’t pull there. The reason I couldn’t pull is that I refused to dress indie to fit in. One day however, I decided that I needed a scarf. I couldn’t decide between a stripy indie looking scarf and a less indie scarf that I liked equally. I decided I’d go for the indie scarf to fit in a little. Worn with just a T shirt (don’t knock it, the indie look for £0), I looked indie as fuck. And I promptly pulled a REALLY hot girl the next time I went. The next time I pulled 3 girls and the time after 2. The last time I was on xtc and had the time of my life! It’s safe to say I like the place now!

The obnoxious indie kids are funny. Hours of entertainment. And as for the piss, the guy who mops up the piss knobbed one of the hot twins that are always there. So he doesn’t need your pity. Don’t worry about violence. Most indie kids are too week to hurt you.

I love indie discos now. I bought a pair of skinny fit jeans ands a retro jacket in the sales. Bring on NYE!!

yes, I know, but I don't really see much of a reason to pay money to go to a club just to smack around some of its members. The "hoho, let's exploit these knobbers" appeal really does wear off after a while and after that it is just shitness exemplified.

You're clearly a sellout, randomguy. The fact that your simple change in appearance instantly made girls interested in you is seriously depressing.

It is depressing but I dont think a reflection on myself more on the indie scene. I'm fine pulling in other places without dressing a certen way. "Sellout" is a bit harsh. I went 5-7 times before I made the drastic change of just waring a scarf. I dont like the music, if somone asks me what music I like in there I tell them.

yeah well I'm feeling grumpy like....

It's because it's guitar music.

Guitar music is for the most part rubbish, I reckon, with a rubbish selection of cultures associated with it.

I'm not even trying to be controversial, either - I'm just right, that's all.

Ah deluded and arrogant. What a great combination  ;)

Hey, I'm bored! :p

I have actually got some guitar stuff in my collection, you know. A bit. Although not actually that much tbh.

says it all about the haircut indie scene. packed full of people who are there to be seen and to pull rather than because they love the music.

that's depressing. and has nothing to do with the indie scene that i know and love.

do they let you in, even though you're clearly only about 13?

Christ you guys seem to have misunderstood me. I'm not there to be seen, in fact I rather I wasn't seen there to be honest. I'm always quite embarrassed when I meet people there I know. And, I try to pull no matter where I am.

To me the place is otherwise shit and I participate with the modern form of the indie scene with a very large pinch of salt. In my opinion the majority of modern indie music is generic, derivative shite and I don’t keep that a secret. I just don’t see any prog rock/jazz/phycadilia discos around, certainly not ones full of girls (obviously that doesn’t stop me from going to gigs, it’s a different type of night out).

I am really not representative of people that go to these things at all. I don’t stand around trying to look cool. I’m up dancing, running around etc. having a good time.

I don’t know much about the old indie scene. Though I do like quite a lot of indie music from 10-15 years ago. While some people might; I don’t think the modern indie scene is at all exciting... Infact, I'm not excited by any scene. I’m not at all a scenester. I love my music... that’s what my record collection is for, and I love getting wasted with my mates and trying to pull. They are separate things for me.

I don’t see why people are trying to preserve the good name of 'indie' when the word means something different now to what it did 10-15 years ago. I'm not the indie kid whipping post you’ve been looking for guys. Sorry.

Some of you seem to have misinterpreted my tone of voice in my original post. So in summery, in my opinion: the modern indie scene is fun at a sideways glance. But is really: horrible, mindless, superficial, shit, which centers more on fashion than the largely poor music.

I was agreeing with you, just adding that there is fun to be had at these places if you don’t take them seriously. The only reason I go back is because its cheep, the girls are hot, and I usually get too wasted for the music to bother me. I’m a gate crasher really. Do we all understand?

Insulting people from the comfort of your own home isn't big or clever. And is somwhat more immature than you're implying I am. I doubt you would say that to my face. Now run allong.

And scarfs indoors? Cunts.
At Le Bateau in Liverpool they have a sign up behind the DJ booth saying 'NO SCARVES-YOU'RE INDOORS AND EVERBODY'S LAUGHING AT YOU'. :D Not all indie clubs are pretentious;they all attract the student fashionista element, but some are worse than others.

Howdy, my first post round these parts and just wanted to chime in. I don't know any indie kids but I think it's because of these buggers when i go to the barbers and ask for a cut they want to make me leave with a bloody mullet on the back of my head. Now I have to specifically ask for ''no fucking mullet''. It's not like I go to a poncy place either. Just the same local place I've been going to since I was knee high to a rattlesnake.

Had to get that off my chest.

Cheers

Django

Just thought I'd bump this thread because it's hilarious and true.

The original post rings pretty true to my experiences with the indie scene. I was just getting into it a few years back, started going to gigs/clubs and I just hated them. I don't understand how music which is generally either bouncy or mellow, but rarely angry gets people so fired up...

Oh well.
