Fucking Indie Culture

There is some nice music coming out of the scene, I just wish journos wouldn't praise some pleasant but derivative stuff as though it were the most amazingly inspired thing in the whole world.

I've been out of the scene for a long time, though I very much enjoyed being in it, shit, nearly ten years ago (although I hated the indie press then too)

imagine, if you will - that the only clubs for dance music were ministry type places full of cooler than tou twats looking down on anyone over 25 or carrying an ounce of surplus flesh...

All the amiable fans of dance music would stay home / go to the pub / take stupid ket in each other's houses.

Except (to sound like a bit of a cheesy raver) that wouldn't happen because a large part of the point of the dance scene is not to be like that. The atmosphere and friendliness is an inherent part of dance culture in a way that it isn't with indie music.

Obviously some clubs or crowds within dance music are a bit too elitist and snobby, and I'm sure someone will be along in a minute to point out how much better it was in '88, but it is still a big part of it.

truly decent indie bands carry an ethos with them anyway though. true indie music brings together true indie people; and if you're one of them you'll find yourself in a happy crowd

am i right?

In a small towns indie nights often have the least offensive music (ie. not club cheese or metallica tribute bands), and least aggressive atmosphere. I have quite a few myspaz (sorry) haircut, pointy shoed mates in this town who are some of the least arrogant, soundest people you'd meet. In the cities though I think there is a different, more middle class and elitist culture. If there was any decent music scene here at all I would avoid the indie scene like the plague.

edit - and does dressing up make you indie? NME fashion is shit, but some people like to wear their own style, which again, is something to do in a boring town.

I know you probably don't mean it like that, but the phrase 'true indie people' just sounds like the self appointed elitist rubbish that people are moaning about.

sounds like your average student union on 'indie night'

its at times like that i wish i had a bomb strapped to my person.

Yes.

As you seem to have thought yourself, he's talking about the people who don't just attend a gig or a club because they've heard that the band/DJ is cool, decide that they don't like it and then proceed to talk very loudly throughout (particularly during quieter numbers), get hideously pissed/pilled up/coked up or all of the above and throw beer at people for fun.

Myspace isn't so bad - Arctic Monkeys used it to bypass the major record companies and get to the top of the charts, so it's got to be good for something.

The "Music" part is pretty unbeatable for artists, it has to be said. Completely free and with two way communication/networking, rather than just a page of Mp3's. I'm on there!

Still a lot of bloody emo though :D

yeah myspeace is sweet for bands danm it. And of most tpes if your only finding indie lost then maybe your just looking for it too hard. Now take that pearl jam t-shirt off put on a smiths one and get a proper haircut.

me on my space

Not that I'm going to give any hints or anything.

well i suppose it's kinda different for me than those in london cos i'm up here in glasgow; unfortunately there do seem always to be fights either in the place or on the street after, mainly not by folk right into the music but by folk who think theyre hard men, or wee gangstas or shit, gettin pissed and fighting about nothing; .

Is this Blanket you are talking about?

I know what the rest of you are on about by the 'haircut culture'. I happen to goto indie nights all the time but I get strange looks for having short hair. I once pulled a girl and she was like 'why do you come here, you dont look like someone who likes indie?' I mean does having a Liam Gallagher haircut alter the sound of the music somewhat?

Athough saying that wankery aside In Glasgow anyhow I find the indie clubs less agressive than say hiphop or dance misic clubs. Neilh Ich Bin Ein Mod etc im sure you will back us up here the Art School and Barfly ae far safer than Archaos, estiny or the Moon.

The rock night they used to have on in Soundhaus was good, and the QMU one too. All the posser types unfortunately go to Optimo which is a shame because its the fucking best club night in the country.

What Ive found in so far in london is that sooo many people define themselves by their muscial tastes. They all compete to be the coolest within its social scene but go way to far and become arrogant and pretentious.

and you have NPL and the Winchester as well - NPL's probably the best indie club in Britain.

If there was any need of a reminder of why I've got no fucking time for the indie scene anymore it was tonight.

Persuaded to go to a Koko "Club NME" thing with some truly abysmal bands playing. And if that wasn't enough, it was populated by some of the most obnoxious individuals imaginable.

As per usual, the "don't care/to cool for you" attitude was in abundance, and translated to over a dozen instances of some idle cuntpipes treading on my foot, shouldering me as they were trying to get past me and without a hint of an acknowledgement let alone and apology.

Went to the bogs once to see some wasitcoated wanker pissing in the corner of the room for absolutely no good reason (given that the urinals were fully operational and had plenty of room) - doubtless he saw no problem with the fact that someone less fortunate than him would of course have to clean his mess up eventually. But then he'd just be some poor, worthless Mexican, so who cares!? Where's my hair straightener? - I was so pissed off by this point that I slammed the door right into him whilst exiting (and I'm not usually a violent guy).

And to top it all up, at my final attempt to savour the experience by trying to have a bop (a Blitzkrieg Bop even, the one saving grace of the evening!) on the dancefloor all was swiftly undermined by some prat in the crowd throwing a lighter which landed on my forehead. Given that it was too dark/crowded to even stand a chance of singling out the fucker responsible and gouge his eyes out with it I decided to leave ASAP. And that was that.

I honestly feel embarrassed to be in the same generation as these people. What a bunch of spoilt, arrogant, image obsessed, uniformed and perpetually narrow-mind prejudiced hypocrites! It staggers me how utterly repellant these people are - I've seen drug dealers at squat parties with a better sense of decorum, just what is going on!? Please, all you "classic indie" people on here, please tell me it wasn't always like this. It can't have been, surely?

oh and, you might just look like a cunt :D :D
