Fuck this shit, I'm gonna quit

Maybe you could try to find some temping in a field that relates to your proposed Masters studies?

That's a really interesting point, although I'm planning to apply for an English MA (Literary Research) so not sure whether such a job exists! I'm a mug for doing it really, studying English Lit is a drifter's dream...I love it though, so why not.

what is your job exactly? i work at Kings in Denmark hill and conditions for secretarial stuff are pretty appalling, offices space, respect, pay etc

you've got all these high flying consultants often in the media but behind them is their support staff in really inadequate cramped offices. Although I work in IT our portacabin is an absolute nightmare in this heat.

Please someone tell me to walk out....I feel like I'm gonna cry, they've sacked me anyway (last day 16 th August)

I fucking hate this place :(

Sacked you?

You might get more money - unfair dismissal.

Go and see someone - put the shits up them. I've worked for a company where someone threatened to take them to court for unfair dismisal.

They paid him £10,000 to drop the threat.

I don't know your contract or anything - but if I were you, I'd go on the sick with stress. You would still get paid.

Its not a case of throwing the towel in, that saying can be used as a great way to ensure that people put up with rubbish shitty jobs and keep their heads down doin and sayin nothin, bollox to that, if you aint happy girl tell em to shove it up their arses

Seconded. I used to work in bank and the conditions were to similar to what you are describing - people needing phonecalls back urgently and control freak manager who wouldn't call back. I got sick of telling people they would have to make other arrangements to pay their rent as we weren't going to be able to do anything for them. The same day I was offered a place at uni I went into work (during my holidays) and handed in my notice.

If you really feel bad about 'throwing in the towel' or whatever, then line yourslef up a new job that you can walk into when you leave you current place.

Snap  Although the consultants don't necessarily have it all easy, they do at least get light and air, whereas the paediatric secretaries are all crammed into a lightless, airless basement, working on shitty out of date equipment covered in a thick layer of greasy dust and grot.

It is fucking boiling in here even in winter, right now I am swooning with the heat.

Gah.

Unless you can live without the money .Dont just quit with nothing to go too
I walked out of a job 2yrs ago only regret is the money ,but, as i was a nurse I think only caring about the pay cheque it was time to go in any case .

I think I am subconciously trying to get fired by getting bolloxed at work and counting everything wrong.

So far the lecherous supervisers just keep patting me on the head rather patronisingly and looking down my top though. :( There will come a day... there will come a day.... eventually one will crack and go mentalist at me in the plumbing department of B&Q.

"There are 867 packets of pipe cleaners, not fucking 866 you fucking tool! Go and count tiles, that'll teach you!"

Then I will give the withering speech I have been rehearsing since I started 3 weeks ago. :)

Liver unit offices are not exactly luxurious though (even the consultants) & nope, I don't work at Kings but I have very good memories of the superb work done there
:)

Took me a lot of stress being the unemployed candidate, was not getting the interviews. So if you want a few quid to be rolling into you bank balance on a regular basis, I recommend that you take Eastenders advice very seriously and get another job before you ditch this one.

Not having a job will impact on you getting another and the long that persists it gets even harder.

Leicester by any chance? I liked the look of that too, but I decided on balance, to go for the MA in Modern Literature . . .

i am a nurse and a midwife in the nhs. and honestly the only thing that keeps me going on a regular basis is the thought that i will quit my job. then usually i feel immediatly a little bit better.

also got this high work ethic going from my family.

eastenders advise is very good though.

Funny, I was originally drawn to the Modern Literature course but changed my mind. Are you doing/did you do the course then?

I am jumping the gun slightly, but I hope to be doing it in 2007. Having spoken to some of the module leaders, I can see the appeal of the Research MA from the perspective of moving into doctoral research, but I personally really like the focus of the Modern Lit course - Postcolonialism/American Lit/Theory/Gender - all the stuff I liked at undergraduate level.

Hey, that's cool - I'm hoping to get on my course in 2007 too. We could be study buddies! Or just spend all day in the Redfearn and retain some semblance of credibility.

 As SU bars go, it's still ok and managed to retain its scuzziness; the same cannot be said of the shopping mall disgrace that is now DMU  . To think, the venue there used to have so many bands/nights, and was John Peel's favourite gig venue. But, ahem, yes, the course and that, very good, um . . .

I don't know if you have done so already, but it's well worth popping in and speaking to them and registering your interest. They're very nice (well, the ones I've met anyway). And they just love MA students! But hey, why wouldn't they? Have you been out of HE for long?

Yeah, I graduated 8 years ago so am well scared about going back...but in a good way (I think). Just hoping the intervening 'lost years' haven't degraded my faculties too much.

I'm definitely going to go in and speak to the relevant people. I've been dithering over this decision for a couple of years and only made up my mind a few weeks ago, so no one's been around.

How about you?
