I think it was a really stupid tactical decision to have Rooney as a 'Lone Ranger' striker up front by himself. And when Rooney came off, and Crouch came on, it was even more obvious that the team were playing too defensively. A couple of times that Crouch was up front, but there wasn't anyone around for him to pass too, the tv commentators said: "But where's the support," and it was true.
England had their defence under control all through the tournament (but then they'd need to with Robinson
), but you don't win games by not conceding goals, you win games by scoring them.They really didn't have enough strikers up front to capitalise on any opportunities. It happened again and again.
