Fruit that makes your lips sting/tingle

yes, but mild allergies can lead to serious allergies.

Yup & thanks to the health-nuts at one school pushing fruit on me when I was young, because it was "good" for me & despite my protesting that it hurt. I now have quite a severe reaction to many types of fresh fruit. First I get the mild tingling, then pain serious blistering & eventually bleeding & peeling in my mouth.

I have to say that anything Melon is amongst the very worst for me.

oh, I'd have thought melon would be pretty innocent. Who knows, maybe it was the melon and not the kiwi. Have never had reaction to kiwi before, but like I said, I used to always have it with yoghurt and the last two times I didn't.

As for melon, this was the first time I've probably eaten it in 2 years. I'm guessing it was the kiwi though

How unusual Pogo - a health conscious school

Minnie, don't rule out the strawberries though - they are pretty allergenic as well.

The whole side of my face swelled up after eating strawberries - at my cousin's wedding :o

It's never happened before or since

my nose always starts running - i get a cold when i eat chillies for some odd reason.

and yeah i do get this with oranges and pineapples and sometimes ordinary apples when I eat too much of them. its because it's acidic.

it doesnt stop me eating the stuff though.

I always wondered why my mouth went all weird after I ate kiwi. Id always just presumed it had something to do with my tongue bar because some foods irritate the piercing (well, just marmite actually). Im glad its not just me thats a weirdo. :)

(Btw - O&L did you see 'Gordons kitchen nightmares' - or whatever it's called - last night.......I'm fond of a bit of meat with a cheese and fruit sauce myself  :p but.... Pork with nectarine and brie sauce...  :D )

No, I keep missing it - or worse, just catching the last 15mins where it's all running smoothly
Pork with nectarines is tres cool, but brie? Blugh. I take it the sauce was just brie rather than a nectarine AND brie sauce?

No - truly - brie AND nectarine sauce.  :D

It was a couple who'd sunk their lifes savings into an eaterie in Blackpool - he'd trained as a chef during the 70's but hadn't worked in kitchens since and she was great at front of house, but insisted on creating the menus too......'interesting, creative ideas' she came up with (during/after a night on the piss/hallucinogenic drugs maybe?) - without tasting them first (lol :D ).

They'd previously won an award apparently.....'Best restaurant in Blackpool' <cough> (granted by the local rag - which looked very self-nominated to me given the handwritten nomination sheets...... ;) ).

See, that's why I hung up my whites and retired. Too many maniacs in the industry. :D
To be fair it probably was the best restaurant in Blackpool.

Not exactly health-conscious IMO. Most of their concepts of "healthy" were discredited even at that time. More they followed health-board/govt policy with the same zeal as they pursued their considerable religious bigotry. It was just another excuse to wield power & abuse I'm afraid. :(

It contains a group of enzymes called bromelain, which breaks down the proteins in meat and flesh including your own mouth. Bromelain works by removing the molecules on the surface of cells, essentially digesting them. Although this makes bromelain useful for tenderizing meat, it can also cause your mouth feeling raw and numb. Bromelain begins to break down the proteins on the surface of your lips, tongue and cheeks when it makes contact with these areas.

Pineapple.

I heard (or maybe imagined) that you should never eat pineapple raw, cos it can cause an allergic reaction. It's way better to grill it, or sprinkle sugar on it, which somehow stops the allergic aspect. Same with peppers - that they are a bit bad for you raw.

Did I imagine it? I spect I did.

that's bogus. it's really good for you raw.
I mean, the tingling is a slight allergic reaction, it's actually a defense mechanism of the fruit, but it doesn't mean it's harming you in any way.
I think it's a similar thing to overuse of hand sanitizer, etc. If we avoid anything that causes the slightest risk, we end up doing more harm sometimes. (i.e. if everyone stops eating raw pineapple or kiwi because it stings your mouth a tiny bit, we could be undoing thousands of years of our bodies growing accustomed to/ learning to override these minor reactions)

Well this thread is certainly an unexpected blast from the past. Will I never be free of this parsnip shame?... :D:facepalm:

It sometimes pops into my head when I see frozen parsnips in the freezer aisle, but I'd completely forgotten your name until this thread bobbed back to the surface this week. :)
