Frugal but fun mid-sized hatch?

Never really liked golfs* for some reason, don't mind Polos or Passats tho, I'm just a fussy git

03 Fabia TDI on 44,000 maybe

(mk1 and mk2 8v GTi excepted)

You could get a 2000 Golf TDI for around 5k in pretty good nick...

It's the option I'd go for everytime, but I think you'd be lucky to get anything for 5k. I'd say nearer 8/9.

You can have an 03 TDI 130 for 5k as long as you don't mind 130,000+ miles.

And the fact that it's a golf. ;)

Being old fashioned, mileage is still an issue. My Polo has 40k on the clock and has air-con, so its slugishness doesn;t really bother me.

100k is something that does bother me, which really after looking at 911 prices over the years it shouldn't. I mean a 1989 Carrera 2 with 180,000 can still make 15k!

It seems VW/Porsche mileage is different to the rest of the planet.

'Cept mkaybe Volvo. :)

Now looking at Corolla D-4Ds

I know they've got a frumpy old image but I love me japs, they've got a proper diesel and the build quality of something milled out of titanium, bit of a mini IS200

As soon as i saw this thread i thought it had corrola written all over it!
Cant vouch for the diesels, but the 3 petrols ive had have all been amazingly reliable and amazingly economical.
Once they get a bit dirty they look much less frumpy :P

Fabs are not big at all y'know. And an Octavia is quite small - little bit bigger than a golf but way smaller than a passat. Of the mid-size cars out there, I would absolutley suggest a pd130 Octavia, chipped. The MK1 is said not be a great drivers car (in common with the mk4 golf and B5 audi A3/4). The mk 2 is v nice to drive imo but may not be 5 grand. I preferred to the golf and a3.

I've been in them all recently, albeit 2.0t versions... bought the Skoda.

Have you sat in a 147? I found it awkward and I'm shorter than you.

A Fabia's too dull but a Corolla isn't?

Try a skoda. I wasn't convinced until I drove it - after that the idea of paying 5 grand more for a golf or A3 seemed... well, incredibly stupid.

I wondered when you'd show up :p

Fucking hell, you actually bought a car?

I think the fact that you've got one probably rules the Skoda option out once and for all. :D

Downer on the 147 front, I was sliding back that way.

Fuck it, best not to apply for the job then. ;)

You'll never survive without a woofer in the boot anyway... 200sx is a hard act to follow with a diesel I fear. Maybe an Ibiza or old leon would be better value? The Ibiza's quite nice they say, albeit small.

Wouldn't rule out a 147 (or 156?) on my say so. It was weird rather than really small.

How about a mk2 golf gti then? Lose on fuel but win on depreciation, provided you don't chav it up too much.

:D

Tempting but probably a bit scuzzy for the carpark.

Drove a 156 back when I ended up with the IS200 and the demo car already had trim falling off everywhere, not really all there compared to the 147 and certainly not against the krautmobiles. Will have to park my sizable arse in a 147 to see what I ken I spose. Am coming around to the Octavia idea actually. Probably all academic as far as the job goes but common sense would dictate ditching the 200 in a year or so anyway (which probably means I'll still have it in three years).

I've got a 307 hdi, it was 3 years old with 26,000 miles on the clock, top of their range for £7,000 so for 5 grand you would get something good I reckon

It's fast and very good on fuel, needs servicing every 12,000 miles, it's only 110bhp but goes well, it's not as nippy as the petrol or golfs and audi's but it's a great car, can move the seating position about a lot and there is a lot of head room inside, mine is a nice green colour :D

I had a hire 307 last year and I must say I was impressed by it. Good space and ergonomics. That was 90bhp one though and it did feel slow.

ICB, I reckon anything you try will be slow and soft after the 200, you just have to change your expectations. I had a similar issue with trying to find a replacement for the jag - everything felt cheap and nasty inside, lexus and audi included. For a while I didn't like anything. But eventually i was comparing the cars I might get to each other instead, worked a bit better.

Is the 200 still working ok?

Oh jesus, you've got to have realistic expectations at least!

I came from a 635CSi and ended up being happy driving the gf's Micra.

Funny thing is that a 240SX was my second choice to the Bimmer. ;) I do still reckon a 307 diesel is a nice choice. I've not heard much about Toyota's oil-burners, but I'd be surprised if they were great - the Micra's a great car, but the diesel version is supposed to be horrific! The Japanese just don't do diesel well.

240sx is the yank version of the 200sx, comes with a 6 cyl NA engine in the same body, nowhere near as much fun, as you'd expect

zeds on t'other hand are lovely old beasts

yep the 200 is still smooth as silk, got some grooved disks and new pads to go on next month, half tempted to smarten it up and try to put 250,000 on it

You could try a Seat Leon... nice looking motor and usually with VW engines.

they are nice but when I was searching for cars I found them to be more pricy than the 307 but maybe a Seat Ibiza might be cheaper?

The Ibiza would be a fair amount cheaper, yes. Though it's also smaller than the Leon as probably falls in the same category as the Clio/Fiesta/206 rather than the mid-size hatch band.

There is also the Seat Altea which probably falls in between the Leon and the Ibiza size-wise, though I don't think it'd be much cheaper than the Leon.

The altea is on the leon/golf/a3/octavia platform I think, but taller a la mini mpv.

I have a feeling ICB's been distracted by the bargain performance car thread...

Leon's definitely on the worth a butcher's list, quite like the look and for some reason I have less prejudice against Seats than any other VAG badge

Like HDi engine and Pugs generally but not sure about the 307's MPVish front styling, sure it makes it feel roomy tho

The only trouble I have with my 307 is that the front. like most cars these days, slopes down at a sharp angle that you can not see the front of the car when driving, makes parking a bugger. I really like the look of them though, go for a test drive, it will be the only way you know for sure
