French bread - what is it like?

I remember hearing somewhere that the difference between (atypical) english and french bread is that we like to use different types of wheat which accounts for the massive differnce in texture and taste.

There's no butter in French bread either afaik.

As I typed that I thought it was wrong! I knew there was something missing... just checked my recipe and it's butter :D

are you thinking of irish soda bread, using buttermilk (not butter)?
