Free Opera!

A big problem Opera have is that compared to the flexibility and usability of Firefox, just what can it offer? I can't see anything of importance that would enhance the web for a user, indeed, it seems to render many pages unreadable or it alters them unlike either FX or IE.

(I have all three browsers on my pc)

Speed! Much faster than Firefox at rendering pages... getting the essential info to you quicker so you click on & get on your way. Plus nice interface, though that may partly be 'cos i'm really used to it after using it for years.

(edit: I also have all 3 browsers on my pc... use moz & ie for dev. work, opera for normal browsing... doesn't break that many sites any more.. just ones with ridiculous js stuff etc.)

Yes, page rendering is way faster. There are a lot of little features built in that, if you use them properly, can make things an awful lot easier (the mouse gestures and extensive keyboard shortcuts get most people - I find the latter very useful on laptops). You can do a lot of this stuff with Firefox extensions as well, but then you start getting into extension bloat territory.

It's also good with memory. Even with Opera 4 on my ancient 400MHz PC and Win98 back in the day, I could have thirty pages open without it batting an eyelid. IE 5.5 didn't like that at all.

It's still shit though - free or not
nah mate.

big plusses with Opera

-view all cookies and delete crap ones with ease via clear dialogue box
-zoom in and out of your page (using plus and minus keys in number pad)
-google search bar as standard - also amazon/ebay/price check search as standard
-when copying into search bar or address window you can "paste and go" - saves having to click on window and pressing enter
-open multiple windows all within one window (explorer just gets messy, windows everywhere)
-skinable
-bookmarks more managable than other browsers
-magic wand remembers passwords
-loads pages quicker than explorer (a must for us dialup users)
-save seesions - opens all the pages you where looking at if theres a crash or something
-customizable toolbar (i just hide them all personally)

its a must.

Not sure about this loading faster, i've tried both in a few evenings net time and they both load about the same speed for me (maybe Opera is a touch faster but not enough to rave about).

oh yeah, and another thing, if you hover the pointer over a link, or picture or anything that takes you somwhere else it gives you the address - more usefull than it may seem - lets you know where your going.

Also with a link you can "copy link address" by rightclicking over a link - usefull for flashget downloads (if that means anything to you) and for posting links on urban!

so far alot of these things can be done in FF, the copy link address is called copy link location for example...

Yeah, that's a big plus.. means you can get back to where you were after crashes or even just the next day after shutting down... all the pages you had open before are there again (tho' obv. not quite so good should parents come to visit & it opens with a porn site in the top tab!)

Fair enough"!

- has anyone managed to install real player as a plug-in in Opera?? Seems to automatically install into Explorer, but doesnt find Opera... any tips?

I have managed to do it, although it can still be a bit tempermental.
That said, I use Real Alternative (available here) a freeware replacement for Real Player, which has an option to install to Opera/Firefox, is smaller and far less intrusive than RealPlayer

You may need to go into Tools>Preferences>Advanced>Downloads (in Opera) and edit the file extensions for .rmm and .ram so they use the right program (probably RealPlayer on your PC)

:)

real alternative-excellent excellent excellent - doesnt try and connect to the internet every ten seconds, doesnt want your email address, doesnt automaticaly make itself the default player for all media files if you dare to use it - plus it works in Opera/Firefox.

Thanks StuPC

Opera, I love it. The only thing that bugs me is that I can't work out how to use sites like IRCSPY with opera so that by clicking on a link I can go straight to my MIRC client and the correct channel . I have to use IE for that. Otherwise I use opera alll the time.
I fixed the real media plug in problem by downloading the netscape .dl file from real and then putting it in the opera plugin directory. More info here...
http://www.opera.com/support/search/supsearch.dml?index=365 It works with the bbc radio player but is a little bit chunky and featureless compared to what you get with IE.
Anyway, I generally just download everything radio wise straight away with streambox so it isn't an issue.the best place to download the real player is from the BBC site. They have a less spyware laden version .

Real Alternative is great but I found it occasionaly could'nt render some streams so went back to the standard player. If all the issues have been sorted out I am more than happy to be out of date.

You can set Opera to handle different protocols with external programs. Try adding MIRC for the protocol "irc" in Tools / Preferences / Advanced / Programs.

Thanks for the suggestion. Doing that means that opens Mirc and takes me to the correct channel in IRC but I can't copy the address of the xdcc transfer to the clipboard. i have tried ctrl-c but it just copies the channel address. Anyway, i am closer than I was before so thanks.
