Free Film Four proves crap already!

I'd be a bit pissed off if they showed different films all the time. The Hard Disk on my recorder is gonna be getting full as it is 'specially with the weather being too hot to sit around watching telly.

Watched Zoolander last night, funny. But what the fuck was his accent all about? Why did he sound exactly like Dr. Evil from those shitey Austin Powers films?

It's a matter of money and a commercial channel like Film Four isn't a charity. It's expensive to get the rights to show relatively new films on TV, so they show as many new films as is profitable for them.

I did find the ending sad though, I do like a happy ending [/lightweight]

I think it ends on a really uplifting note. Amazing film.

Got to agree that you have to watch Zoolander stoned. I was in fits at the "Mer-MAN.....Mer-MAN!" bit.

What is really pissing me off is the low bitrate they are broadcasing FilmFour in on freeview.

The picture is appalling on a decent sized screen, and the sound horribly distorted even at low levels.

 :(

is that why our picture keeps cutting out?

Zoolander was hilarious (and I did watch it stoned as well!). Satirical swipe at fashion industry with funny conspiracy theory thrown in at the end (all major assasinations carried out by models).

Ben Stiller's "look", his accent, his whole take on being a "beautiful" male model, is even funnier given the fact he has that curiously intense face, coupled with his over-the-top acting.

Had fun watching it. As long as F4 stays free I might even get used to watching TV again :)

Blimey, I thought 'Lost in Translation' was an extrodianry film, really thought provoking and quite beautiful. I'm quite keen to see it again.
Tonights film 'Zoolander' is meant to be good as well, really funny.
I'm really enjoying film 4.
zoolander is funy. mind you I'd not stay in to watch tv full stop. It's crap

It's more likely to be because the channel Film4 broadcasts on (Multiplex D) is in most regions broadcast at less power than the other channels. Do you get the same problem on the other channels on that frequency (The Hits, UK Bright Ideas/FTN, TMF and Ideal World)?

Did anyone else find this film racist and offensive - reeking of American imperialsim. It showed Japanese people and culture with all the subtelty of a 70's British sitcom. Couldnt make it even half way thorugh - am I tripping?

Someone back me up here...

I thought it was more, like, taking the piss out of those attitudes, and how foolish and banal and typical of an imperialist nation those views are.

But then maybe *I'm* tripping.

I can see what you mean, I wouldn't go so far as saying it was racist, but it struck me as naive. I found it impossible to relate to the condescending attitude of the two main characters towards a different culture, and the film was asking the audience to sympathise with them. I could understand the alienation she felt in her relationship with her husband, but the culture issue was not dealt well. There was an incongruity because the director chose to present the cultural alienation from the perspective of a dominant culture. This is one of the reasons why I feel that although Sofia Coppola is very capable in a technical and creative sense, she rushed into making this film.
