Freddie Mercury - Rock's Greatest Frontman?

Well?

I'm inclined to think he was, although I admit I never saw Queen live and consequently have only the TV footage to go on. The way he could work a crowd and the sheer energy he put into performances night after night makes him the greatest frontman, IMHO.

And, if there is (or was) a better frontman than Freddie, then who is it and why?

Yeah, Freddie was awesome. I'll never forget seeing Queen on "Live Aid" when he got the crowd clapping absolutely in unison to "Radio Ga Ga," all 75,000 of them.

i watched that live aid concert recently, to see if it lived up to the hype of 'best ever live thing', and have to say it was a bit rubbish. he was a bit of an ambarassment by then.

I thought of Freddie the other night.

His old leather boots used to hang in a local of mine until a new manager took over the bar a few years ago and removed them. Now that manager has gone and when I went to his leaving drinks I thought, "where are the fucking boots?!"

He thought taking them away would make it into some kind of trendier bar; it just removed a bit of its history. :(

His singing was technically astounding but completely soulless.

Again - not arguing as to whether you like him or Queen, but define "soulless" in this context?

Seems to me he was a performer who threw his heart and soul into the performance and the vocals...?

that's just it, it's all performance - no honesty, no real feeling, no human communication, no soul.
He could sing alright, whisper, scream, roar, hit all the notes whatever but there's nothing at all in a Freddie performance that speaks to me as one person to another, it's just hollow. Not the end of the world perhaps but it's what always bugs me when people go on about how great he is - it says nothing to me about my life, as it were.

Epic bump but topical. Pretty much the entire contents of his house as well as other iconic material, including manuscript lyrics of some of Queen's greatest hits, not to mention Freddie's iconic baby grand piano, are going to be auctioned next month by Sotheby's. One of the few times when I genuinely wish I were rich enough to treat myself to an indulgent vanity purchase.

Needless to say I'm not trying to plug bloody Sotheby's here, but it's worth checking out the auction's listings of his estate- a very interesting browse. He clearly loved antique French furniture, and preferred 18th & 19th century art over modern wares.

Sotheby's are already estimating his piano to fetch £2-3m. I'd be surprised if it doesn't hit the £5m mark, frankly.

Apparently the queue is absolutely mahoosive so not for the impatient.

There is some beautiful stuff in that auction. A Matisse piece I've always liked is in there. Freddie had style.
Agree. And even if not every item I noticed was my cup of tea (assuming I could afford them, anyway), they do suggest he had an appreciation for quality stuff and a taste of his own, rather than buying artworks by the latest hotshot on trend at the time that would have been recommended by a celebrity interior designer, as so many rich and famous go for.

Little Richard. And iggy pop. Both utterly possessed by the music they were performing. Not sure you could say the same about freddy mercury.
