Frank Bruno

I like Big Frank

Guess he had a load of money and little to do so just went off the rails
Good to hear he is back on form and chatting away in his unique style

frank bruno was a good boxer he was the world champ ? but not for long v tyson the animal !! he was a natural gifted athlete spent most of his time in the gym, outside of the ring he did loads of charity work free !!! T.V pantos' e.tc. his mental condition illness ,was not his fault it can happen to anyone?

I appreciate your efforts at writing like a punch-drunk boxer
;)

Bruno had a big heart but a glass chin and the speed of a sloth. Fights involving him and Gary Mason virtually went in slow motion

I liked Frank Bruno, he was a trier. I went to F.Bruno v L.Lewis at the Cardiff Arms Park and it was clear from quite early on that Frank would probably not win. It was the same against Tyson though Frank did rock Tyson with a hard punch.

Later I met him very briefly in Essex shortly before his admission to hospital and it was clear that his life was quite strange at that time, lots of hangers on etc.

IMO Tyson was finished from that fight onwards, Bruno being able to get through Tysons normally super tight defence was the first sign of things to come

IIRC this was the first fight without trainer Kev Rooney. That was the end of Tyson at his peak

Unfair. Bruno took the best that Tyson could throw at him and stayed on his feet. His problem was when he got hit, he would stiffen up and become easy prey. He had one of the best jabs in boxing, but not much body movement with all that muscle, and though he was a powerful puncher, he didn't punch from the hip. If he had he would have taken opponent's heads off.

If he and Lennox Lewis walked down the street together, I'm sure it would be Big Frank getting more cheers. The Brits love a good loser :)

On Talksport now and in great form again. Really good to hear him laughing, joking and, generally, not thinking the CIA want to kill him. Should be an inspiration to someone like Gazza.

He wasn't that good at boxing though, really, was he?

Isn't that why Gazza played football instead ?

this thread will stand forever as a testament to how miniscule my sporting knowledge is

As is your brain. :)

I would love to meet Frank Bruno. I've only ever heard good about the bloke.
I'll bet he's a right comic in real life.
I have met a good few footballers. Most didn't have the brains to know what humour was. Thick bastards to a man.

It's 20 years ago tomorrow as it goes.

25 Feb 1989 in the Hilton Hotel in Vegas, for the WBC, WBA & IBF title. Bruno stunned Tyson in the 1st, was put down in the 1st and was deducted a point for holding in the 1st. I listened to it on the radio in my sisters in Hanwell, I'd been out to a rave and came home to listen to it.

It was just less than 1 year later when he lost to Douglas so yes, I agree with you, his best days were behind him. Such a fucking shame too... I can never put him near the top of the all time best due to the fact he lost his way. It would have been great to see if he could get better.

I love Bruno, loved his biography aswell, he's a legend imo. I fondly remember the night he won the title against McCall. Me and my missus were delighted when he won.
