That's one thing that technology has improved...cheap fine needlepoint pens. Pilot make my favourites.

Fountain pen for best, gel rollerball when the paper's not up to it. I like mechanical pencils too 
Pen of choice at the moment is the Ohto Tasche FF10T
It's 98mm long when closed, 145mm long with the cap posted and weighs about 20gm

Pilot are (iirc) Japanese and are a couple of quid each. Very reliable.

nah, but she has got a kitten. Pretty much the same thing when it comes to pen displacement.You got children as well? I used to take telephone messages with a crayon, ffs.

Delivery by Royal Mail 1st Class is free if you spend over £10 - mostly stuff I've ordered has come next day, or the day after at latest. Never had any problems, so I don't know what their customer service is like if something goes wrong. Deliveries may of course be affected by current postal strikes

Good to have a personal recommendation. If I'd happened across that site randomly I might not have looked at it more closely because of the design. Bookmarked it now though and thanks for that

I used to love fountain pens but made the mistake of using one on a plane once (yes I know
) and now I'm slightly scared of them leaving me with schoolboy fingers (not to mention a ruined suit). So nowadays I favour mostly Pilot although this pen is getting me excited. Having said that, I do like some weight to my pens and 20gms is probably a little on the light side

They are technical drawing pens, so really designed for smoother papers etc... There's nothing else that will give you a line as precise as a proper technical pen, but they do need looking after. Faber Castell ones are very good too. My sister uses them (both makes) and seems to get away with drawing on most surfaces, but she knows what she's doing (you kind of don't really press on them, hold them more upright too) and doesn't use the finest nibs usually. You can make them last ages if you look after them.
Automatic pencils are cock; clutch pencils sharpened to a ridiculous point ftw...
These are really nice for just general note taking, doodling etc:
Fountain pens I haven't used for ages, mostly Lamy when I did. My mum has a Mont Blanc (wedding present or something), will see if I can persuade her to let me try it and post a review.

Use biros mostly but would love a proper fountain pen, a montblanc to be specific...
I've got a Parker 25, writes very well, metal body, you can thoughtfully chew away as much as you like! ...Not that I write anything anymore, but saw me through school etc.
Alas, it's not made anymore. Google tell's me it's a "design classic" along with my Anglepoise lamp... eBbay if you want one I guess.
