FORT HOOD SHOOTINGS: 12 Dead, 31 Injured On Texas Military Base

Doesn't matter what your role is in the military, you're still trained to use the standard small arms (which means you have to put in constant range time, and to reach a minimal standard of proficiency). In this case the 9mm Beretta 92SF pistol and the M16A3 assault rifle, and that's whether you're a shrink, a cook or a communications specialist.

Chaplains in the US army never have and never will be authorized to carry a weapon. We have an entire Military Occupational Specialty dedicated to protecting chaplains. Each chaplain gets at least one Chaplain's Assistant to help with administration while in garrison(out of the field) and to act as a bodyguard when in the field(training or deployed). Even if the chaplain enjoys sport shooting or hunting on his or her own time, while in uniform they are not issued weapons and do not go to the range unless in the capacity of spiritual counselor. The chaplains assistants are required to practice marksmanship, functioning as a bodyguard and how to move with and stay out of the way of the grunts when moving with a unit.

And not everyone gets range time with a pistol. The M4 carbine is the basic weapon that is issued in the US army. The army has never used the M16A3. The navy has. You only get a pistol if it is authorized for your MTOE(military table of organization and equipment) position such as platoon sergeants, machine gunners, most officers, pilots, etc.

I thought Officer Munley shot him after being wounded?

The same press who first reported he was dead and also there were accomplices came up with that. I guess it was confusing for everyone so can't be to hard on them....still credit where credit is due.
