Pretty mad this. You can perhaps understand an enlisted man going postal and not being caught beforehand, but a Major?

Serious questions about to be asked in the US Army, methinks.

12 people dead. :(

It is really kind of ironic; after the shooting in Afghanistan, Presidential spokesman Humayun Hamidzada said:

"These are incidents that can happen anywhere. The crazy man who has done this has also attacked the Afghan police," he told the AP. "You can't use this isolated incident to say that there is a problem with the police force of Afghanistan. In the U.S., people shoot up people in a shopping mall. There are crazy people everywhere."

I bet a lot of people thought he was nuts to say that, but he was right.

I wonder how many people the US have killed in Afghanistan and Pakistan today, I think NATO did for quite a few with a missile. Doesnt war just suck?

Yes, people getting killed does suck. It sucks when it's afghans and it sucks when it's americans.

Could be alot of things, from anti government right wing militia to a weird suicide pact. Far to early for anything other than guessing.

I seem to recall a Vietnam vet doing some tower shooting in the sixties, so a traumatised vet is not out of the question.

high powered rifle could have been anything but these days the high powered snipers rifles are .50 cals. They dont leave many wounded so its more likely to be a civilian sniping rifle or a M1.

Some army units still use M14s (7.62 x 51) for certain roles, too.

Well they had time to get out at least 43 aimed shots. Probibly more. The only armed people on the base would have likely been MPs and the watch on the gates and fence. So I guess that is where they had the time for the shooting from (the time it would have taken for the platoon on guard duty to get to the scene). I would think it most likely they smuggled the ammo into the base as that sort of thing is usualy under a good deal of security (to reduce suicides).

An M16 is not a snipers rifle by any stretch of the imagenation...
Too right!!
...but then again you would not need one at those ranges.
Especially given that the defining characteristic of the M16 was that the bullet tumbles once it has left the barrel. Don't know if this is still the case with the A3 (most up-to-date) version, but was with the Mk1 and A2 versions.

What sort of weapons do psychiatrists usually carry?
Doesn't matter what your role is in the military, you're still trained to use the standard small arms (which means you have to put in constant range time, and to reach a minimal standard of proficiency). In this case the 9mm Beretta 92SF pistol and the M16A3 assault rifle, and that's whether you're a shrink, a cook or a communications specialist.

He used handguns didn't he?

Pretty hefty bodycount if so.

What an utter fucking cunt. Let's hope he's getting the best 'treatment' possible in that military hospital he's in.

He'll get great treatment, so that he can be brought to trial and put in the stockade for the rest of his life.

from reuters:

Suspected gunman Major Nidal Malik Hasan opened fire with two handguns at the Fort Hood Army post on Thursday, in one of the worst killing sprees ever reported on a U.S. military base, army officials said.

one of the worst? there's been worse then?
