Forrest Gump

Still liking it... ;)

I love the bit when he runs for 3 years and then... he just stops... :)

My take is that he's a disabled guy (rather than someone stupid) who has an extraordinary life precisely for that reason.

But thats bollocks though isn't it, cos every box of chocolates I've ever seen has a little instruction sheet telling you what each one is:confused:

i have always said that!!
from the very day it was released

i however watched it for the 1st time last night and loved every minute of it
even cried a couple of times, though the bird in it is a selfish bitch

Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich: "a conservative film, a reaffirmation that the counter-culture destroys human beings and conservative values."

Thomas Byers: "the forgetting and/or emptying out of history on the one hand, and its re-membering and rewriting on (or in) the other"

I could go on..

What I've always wondered is, once they are married, whether Jenny has sex with Forrest when she knows she is HIV+. It's kind of glossed over.

I never noticed that his kid was played by Haley Joel Osment until last night. :o

The fact that Forrest Gump achieved such high box office numbers is proof of how far we have to go as a species.

I can hardly believe this sorry excuse for a film is being discussed on Urban beyond streams of well warranted abuse.

This is a disgusting film. unconvincing. patronising. insulting. It's the 'American dream' packaged for unquestioning zombies. It is the one film I really wish I had walked out of the cinema at.

If I listed the top ten worst films ever this would be No 1 without a seconds thought.

the more i think about this film, the more annoyed i get.

look at the basic story arc for each character.

if you're an obedient idiot, life will be great and you will be lauded.

if you think for yourself and act independently, your life will be miserable and you will die horribly.

there are so many other things up with it, but the above is the main thing.

indefensible crap

That's not entirely the case with all the characters.. Lieutenant Dan would have died for following orders but the simple good-nature of Forrest gives him a new lease of life (and a new set of legs).

There are so many more films that weigh in with far more pap than Forrest Gump that fail to make any impression on audiences.

I thought it was watchable. I loved the way he kept on visiting the Whitehouse, culminating in him showing his arse to President Carter(?) And I learnt where Elvis Presley got his dancing from.

"don't stray from the path of righteousness - you'll get AIDS".

fucking filth

I'm not entirely sure how you arrived to that conclusion from the film.

Basically Forrest loved a woman who'd been abused as a child and who had a terrible life, and a messed up one as a grown up. At no point did it seem to be judging her - she just seemed to be a victim of the circumstances.

Is it really right wing/judgemental? I didn't think so at all.

And Forrest wasn't an 'obedient idiot', I thought it was pretty clear that he some 'issues', but somehow he managed to lead an amazing life on his own terms.

That's why it's funny. It's all-American bullshit.

But very good quality, movingly sentimental all-American bullshit. With a couple of quite sweet messages thrown in there for good measure, as Iemanja says.

It's a classic of the genre! :D

Glad I've amused you...

Anyway I made my judgement on this film based on my own experiences/perspective, as we all do when it comes to talking about films.

I've read all the negative and positive comments about this film over the years, and at the end of the day, everytime I watch it I feel somewhat uplifted by the whole thing.

This is not attempting to be a political film at all, and once I watched it I thought of it as a tale, a modern day tale.

Absolutely!

I would've married him and had his babies if I'd been that woman. (:D )

I think you're all missing the point of the analogy

Obviously the menu card in your bourgeoisie chocolates is a relatively new phenomenon, whereas in Forrest's dearly departed mother's time you would be spending all your money on the chocolates rather than the presentation.

Would you rather he said 'life is like a wrap of powder that Oddworld found on her floor...' huh?

I think you should all bare this in mind the next time you go to a dinner party.

I

now that would be a decent enough party to go to!
though you would have to wonder what twat dropped their little wrap on the floor! though obvioulsy if you find out you don't give it to them, their bad for being careless
