I've been with my husband for over 20 years and only yesterday I realised that he holds his fork with his left hand for eating anything, even if he's not using a knife. :D But he holds a spoon with right hand. He says that's how it's supposed to be and that restaurants and tables are laid out with forks to the left of the plate. He was raised in the UK. It was a revelation to me that, according to him, probably most people do hold the fork on non-dominant hand and I just could not believe it! I was outraged :D :D So we thought we'd do a poll.

I grew up in Brazil and I've always held both fork & spoon with right hand and knife goes on the left hand. I tried using the fork on my left hand and had no control. It seems that using the fork with the non-dominant hand is something you have to train/force yourself to do, otherwise it's more natural to have it on the dominant hand.

It got me thinking, it's the non dominant hand fork thing maybe a class thing? It takes more training to hold the fork with non dominant hand so it's this some posh etiquette that demonstrates one is more refined?

I remember there being a thread on this sometime ago - but I can't find it...

I use knife with my non dominant (left hand) for cutting food if I'm eating, even steak. If I'm chopping/cooking then the knife will be on my dominant hand - although that's beyond the scope of the poll. I'm assuming everyone uses their dominant hand for chopping up.
