For the unitiated what sort of soul music would you put in front of them

Curtis is my favourite I think, but bit surprised Isaac Hayes hasn't been mentioned yet. Willie Hutch is another similarly funky one I've recently got into.

Also, can we class Prince as soul? If so, there's a whole new world to explore there.

Yep. Willie Hutch did some great stuff. The other 3 aernt too bad either.
Ever heard of Sherri Taylor...I love the song weak hearted.

Not sure they've been mentioned yet, but I like what I've heard of Donnie Hathaway and Bobby Womack too.
Yup, I mentioned them early on. The best live soul performance I've seen was Bobby Womack. He sang for about four hours solid....

Where to start? With some of the classics and in no particular order

Otis Reading - Sitting on the Dock of the Bay

Brenda Holloway - Every Little Bit Hurts

Dionne Warwick - Walk On By

Jackie Wilson - (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher

Sam & Dave - Soul Man

Sam Cooke - What a Wonderful World

The Impressions - People Get ready

All a bit obvious no?

If this is for the uninitiated seize the chance to introduce them to soul music not drawn from the obvious? (And it is interesting to note that some folks appear to think soul ended in the late 1970s).

;)

Go on then tell us what soul music you would choose.

i always sing at work to pass the time and i've been occasionally singing this for the last twenty four years (the marvellos version though).

Don't suppose you could rip an mp3 from that album and send it to me could you? I'd love to hear the Marvellos version. How does it compare to Pat's?

i'm getting right into old soul nowadays. sod Motown - it's all about 50s & 60s RnB. i'll do you a cd if you want ken.

This song has been rattling around my head for the last week or so. I've no idea why because I haven't listened to it for a long time

Roberta Flack -
It's got me out of bed with a smile on my face :)

After I posted the Seeger thread I realised there was a link.
