For the unitiated what sort of soul music would you put in front of them

Isn't soul music.

Mwwwwhahahahahahahahahahaa!

She sang across genres, but she definitely had her soul moments. Many of them were covers, but that wasn't uncommon in those days. And she had an excellent ear, picking out some fairly obscure songs to cover.

I love this version of "Love Power" by The Sandpebbles.

I haven't heard another version. Did a quick search but couldn't find anything. Do you have a link? I'd love to hear it.

Rza just lifted it straight, didn't he? I love finding the originals behind hip hop sampling - it's a great fringe benefit of loving the genre

And Can I Kick It?, maybe most famously.

But yeah, the whole record is a big sampler for hip hop producers.

Amazing voice, superb band, great, great songs. :)

Curtis Mayfield produced Baby Huey's stuff... have a listen to "A Change Is Gona Come" by him (baby huey) when you have 10 minutes where you dont need to do anything but listen, its a TRIP!
Great way to end a compilation I'd say.
Amazing track.

Some northern faves

Cecil Washington & The Group - I Don't Like To Lose

Gene Toones - What More Do You Want

The Tomangoes - I Really Love You

I'm On My Way-Dean Parrish

Timmy Yuro - It'll never be over for me

'-It's almost like eating beans by the pound,
Then wrapping up in adhesive tape from the waist down...'

As soul records go, that never fails to make me go: '-WTF?!' :D:cool:
