Football league survey: possible changes to the beautiful game

Brixton Hatter

Home is south London mate
I had an email from the Football League today asking me to fill out a survey on fans' opinions. This was because I filled out last year's fans survey. Anyway, the questions make interesting reading as they indicate the sorts of things the FL appear to be looking at to improve the game. I wonder what everyone thinks of these ideas? There's cetainly some interesting ones in there! Most were agree/disagree or yes/no answers, but some were mutliple choice.

Suggestion 1
If a match ends as a draw both teams would get one point as they do now, but instead of the match ending there would be a penalty shoot-out and the winner would get an extra point.

Suggestion 2
When teams win away from home they should receive four points rather than three as at present.

Suggestion 3
Teams should receive a bonus point if they score more than three goals in a match.

Suggestion 4
It has been suggested that one way to stop players diving in order to win penalties or free kicks would be to allow the football authorities to review video evidence after matches and to punish players if they can clearly be shown to have dived.

Suggestion 5
The offside law should be changed so that it only applies in the penalty area.
Currently clubs have three years to make their grounds all-seater once they have reached the Coca-Cola Championship. Would you...
- Be in favour of changing the law so that safe standing areas are permitted at all Coca-Cola Championship grounds?
- Be in favour of keeping arrangements as they are now so that grounds remain all-seater?

Questions about the date / time of midweek games

If the England national team are playing a fixture on Saturday at 3pm, would you prefer to see your club's match?
- Played on Friday evening
- Postponed
- Played on Saturday with an early kick-off (e.g. 12.00pm)
- Played on Saturday with a 3pm kick-off
- Played on Sunday

Should there be a minimum requirement for "homegrown players" to be included in teams? If so, how many players?

What is the most pressing issue for the football authorities to address in the area of 'Fair Play'?
- Players diving
- Players feigning injury
- Players kicking the ball away at free kicks
- Players failing to retreat at free-kicks
- Players using bad language
- Racial abuse
- Players illegally taking performance enhancing substances
- Players showing dissent/lack of respect towards match officials
- None, no need to address any issues

There were also some questions around club finances, ticket prices, keeping the leagues competitive etc.

The final question was a good one: What single thing, apart from lowering ticket prices, would encourage you to attend more games?

BTW: Please don't ask me for the link to the survey - it will only let you fill it out if you were registered previously!

I don't think video evidence can very often conclusively prove someone has dived - besides the FA could reduce diving in the entire English game by around 60% by simply shooting christiano ronaldo in the face.

Suggestion 2

I quite like the sound of that one.

Suggestion 5
The offside law should be changed so that it only applies in the penalty area.

Nah. Lets keep football a team game and not a sprinting contest eh?

3 shit ideas there

yep , independant panel reviews games after the fact via video to punish all things not observed . Sounds like a good idea but how will that be implemented for teams in lower leagues . Teams in the 4th division don't exactly have great camera coverage ( certainly with recourse to all the angles you can get at premier league teams ) , so how will this be applied fairly across the board of the football league l , and I haven't even started to think about non-league here either !

Suggestion 5

Fine how it is , although it needs to be worded much better so that offside calls are more consistant

What's embarrassing is that unlike piss poor tabloid journalists you aren't paid anything to spout such cliched empty bollocks. C.Ronaldo has been no where near as guilty of diving as plenty of others in the premiership this season.

I'd love to see a picture of your face when he wins player of the year.:D

Talking of cliches......
how many Man Utd games have you been to this season?
last season?
in your life?

last season i saw them play at portsmouth.

of course the irony is that if i had been over to Old Trafford alot i'd be accussed of being a fully paid up member of the prawn sandwhich brigade because I can afford to travel over from Belfast so often.

And what sort of tosser equates being able to afford going to games with being a "real" fan?

ah bless your cotton socks.

you've seen your team once!

Remember that folks - this gobby tosser has only seen Man Utd play once!:D :D :D

right well perhaps you want a start a "Send revol68 to Old Trafford" fund then? I'm not to proud. :D

and still find it amazing that in the current state of football and ticket prices that someone thinks they can judge a persons footbal/team support by how many games they go to.

As I said before the person I know whose been to Old Trafford the most supported Blackburn up until 1998, so i don't put much weight in it.

load of tosh

load of humourous tosh

hmmm, all down to interpretation, but yes, something like this might be good. what would be even better woudl be if the ref's were good enough to spot the divers in the first place and issue a straight red ;)

Suggestion 5

brign in a element of standing. but no kids in there

postponed.

Should there be a minimum requirement for "homegrown players" to be included in teams? If so, how many players?no. it shoudl be desirable, but its nto realisitic.

diving, feigning injuries, racial abuse, taking the drugs man, lack of respect to officials.

PMSL :D

Thats never going to happen , would you settle for a 10% guarentee that your team will win ( and thats being optimistic since your manager is a twat :p )

I disagree , see my response earlier for reasons !
Well, they would just have to rely on what they have now. Video evidence isn't available for all rugby games, they just make use of it where it is.

Yea I saw the survey too but got stuck on the first question, so I gave it to my Wednesday supporting flat mate to fill in :D

No it won't cos I didn't do it last year and someone posted the link on a Sheff Utd message board and it let my flat mate fill it out

Hmmm I may have to take this back! Link's disapeared from the message board and when I gop to the page from history it says I already completed the survey, so my flat mate must have taken the person-that-posted-it's go!!

1- Americanisms. Weaker teams would hold out for 90 minutes, and then hope to clinch three points from the shootout, Basically, it's just another incentive to park the bus.

2- While not a *terrible* idea, I doubt that it would improve quality standards

3- Could be exploited to table-fixing (scenario: last week, a 3-3 puts both a team in Europe/Promotion and the other away from the relegation zone)

4- Straight-forward sending-offs for blatant diving or addition to disciplinary points afterwards if the ref fails to spot. But I'm talking about blatant dives - no contact or jumping against a defender and then whine about it, not "ooh, that shove in the back wasn't enough to make him fall" or simply go off balance, and then get up without whining.

5- Bollocks from Waddington's Table Soccer. I'd rather to do the opposite: take out the offside rule when the ball is being played inside the last 18 yards.
