Football Grounds

w)
Grays Athletic

Really? Good Lord, you are a footclub's dream! You even went to Grays for them!

I have been to that ground, but not for actualy football matches. Same for Toottenham (to speak to people who were doing a football-and-English course for us) and Barcelona (tourist visit). I've only been to Charlton to watch an actual match, but it seemed like a decent stadium.

Course, the only reason I'm responding really is my shock at seeing Grays Athletic listed.

Visited most of the league clubs, although many have since moved to new grounds which I have yet to visit. Like JTG, I cannot be arsed to list them all, but the best ground I have visited must be the Azteca Stadium, Mexico City, and the worst would be Chessington and Hook by Chessington World of Adventure up there with Springfield Park, Wigan Athletic's old ground.

I can't remember how close I actually got to the 92 - I was never actually trying to do it as such, though if I'd got much closer I guess I'd have felt obliged. I think I racked up something like 75 by the early to mid-Nineties. However, by that time a couple of things changed: one is that clubs started changing their grounds so that every season you'd lose one or two of your set, and the other is that I drastically cut down on my away games. So I never got much (or any) closer.

Oh yeah, that as well! Of course the teams going up have sometimes been teams that have gone down, but still, no, it didn't help.

And I never did go to Scarborough. (Or not for football, anyway.)

Entertain us with the reasons that lay behind your choice.

Looks quite pleasant in the photos but imagine the ground in January, sleeting with 1200 Dons turning the ground into the 3rd battle of Ypres.

Photos from this excellent non-league website..

I've seen Rovers play on a school playing field in Dublin with a few plastic chairs brought out to stand along the touchline. The FAI insisted the game was played in the afternoon because the original evening kick off clashed with Shelbourne's Champions League game and they didn't want the crowd to be affected by the visit of our crack English outfit

Vast majority of these were with the Rovers :) There's others but I'm bored now.

I went to Grays too. Can't remember seeing <the poster> STFC there though. :hmm:

We obviously went on different occasions then.

I went with some Forest Green Rovers supporting mates a couple of years ago. Can't remember where we were playing that day.

Luton once played in a field on the Isle of Man in this pre-season tournament - I think it was us, Shrewsbury, Isle of Man XI and someone else. When our captain Nicholls needed a piss, he just went by the side of the pitch!

And there was one pub in town - resulting in all the players and all the fans being together in the same pub every night!

I saw us play a pre-season friendly there. I think we lost.

We played in the IoM tournament a few years back. 15 years ago we played in one on the Isle of Wight for three years - we weren't asked back after the last time cos there was a spot of bother. Apparently AFC Bournemouth wanted to join forces to take on Ryde and our lot told them to get stuffed and had a go at both AFCB and Ryde together.

Pre season tours are great :D

Forgot to mention above - Windsor Park & Carlisle Grounds in Ireland and a multitude of non-league places. Bitton, Mangotsfield, Yate, Hallen etc etc
