two kinds of wonderful
Are you displaying your national teams flag in support of their efforts in the world cup?

We have a lovely large eng-er-land flag, and a couple of diddy ones that the daughter seems to have commandeered. just got to decide where we are going to display it. No fear of “lowering the tone” as its flags galore round our way :D

Back in the days when I used to write about football, I tried to interest publishers in a book about how I didn't suppoort England. They claimed there wasn't any interest in the topic: which is odd, because whenever I say so, it provokes a great deal of debate.

Anyway, I was thinking of calling it Football Without The Flag.

A lot of the Manc celebs interviewed in this weeks observer music monthly (Hookey, Mani etc) don't really support England, I suppose thats party symptomic of living in an area where the club game is historically so strong.

My home town of Barnstaple (like many SW towns) get absolutely draped in St Georges crosses and I reckon thats because the lack of club football support in the area. We're an hour from Exeter City FC, two hours from Torquay and the Argyle and 4.5 from Portsmouth, the nearest premiership side. Everyone supports a team, but not for the strong family and historical reasons that people do in other parts of the country - people just support the team that was best when they were young - I don't think that that often can raise the same passion as someone who's entire family supports a team that is on their doorstep.

I'd be interested in doing a survey of flag flying incidence correlated to the standard of football in areas of England - I reckon there would be a fairly strong negative correlation.

Possibly right, but it might also be that in-your-face nationalism is stronger in smaller towns and rural areas than in big cities.
is london the exception for this?

(Scientific brain engaged). So what we need to do is check out some small rural towns with historically big and successful football clubs? And some big cities with a lack of historically big and successful clubs. Any suggestions?

How do you mean?
i mean, going on the assumption that in-your-face nationalism would be lesser in big cities, i would think that london would be the exception. going purely on the number of flags flying around the city - be they on cars or buildings etc.

ah, but then it would need to be a london with a history of crap clubs.

wouldn't it?

can't we just go back to "who is flying a flag"

:D

Mani - like a hell of a lot of mancs would support republic of ireland over england were it to come down to it.

This time next week I bet every pub in England has the bunting and flags adorned. And by nightfall the drunks'll be wearing them.Hehe

I'm thinking of getting a big fuck-off England flag for the house, something I've never ever done, or considered

It'll be there because I am English and will be supporting England in the World Cup; I don't really expect us to win it but it's the taking and enjoying it that matters, as with all sport

:)

bravo

how gauche is that
you might as well write 'child rapist' on your forehead for all the good it will do for perceptions of your intelligence and wholesomeness

not specifically!
as to whether big flags are worse than little flags, i don't know

wasn't there a big fuss in the tabloids a while back about someone who was told by the council that they couldn't fly a flag of st george

I'm not sure if anybody has gone on about big flags and little flags, but it looks like you've decided to wade in with some inflammatory words of bile: "child rapist" for fuck sake??

You have your views, so fair enough, but for me this is about football, no more no less

:)

I like flags. Not any specific ones, nor for any particular ideological reason. I just like them asthetically. Bright, well designed emblems/designs flutting in the wind against a blue sky.

I won't be getting one for the world cup, just because it's not really something I would normally do.

Donna - do you decry Chinese people waving their flags? How about Brazillians?
